U.T.P.B. downs Sul Ross, 69-62 in Tuesday night shootout

ALPINE, Texas- A series of fourth quarter turnovers spelled the Lady Lobos' undoing as Division II U.T. Permian Basin (3-3) escaped with a 69-62 victory over Sul Ross (2-1) Tuesday night at the Gallego Center.

Sully will host Schreiner University November 29 at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Lobos broke a 10-10 tie as Avery Gregory (Lubbock/Cooper) scored on a fast break layup with 4:22 left in the first quarter.

Ellyn Avery (Grady/GHS) followed up on the next possession with a jumper in the paint which started a 5-2 run for a 20-12 lead for the home team at the end of the opening period.

Sul Ross broke out to a double digit advantage as Lindsey Hearn (Lubbock/LCHS) drained a three-point shot to begin the second quarter for a 23-12 Lady Lobo lead.

Gregory then bingoed from outside the arc at the seven minute mark extending Sully's lead back to a double digit margin, 29-19.

Katy Boren's (Lubbock/Cooper) three-pointer gave Sul Ross it largest lead of the half, 32-19 with 6:28 remaining.

The Falcons worked their deficit down to three off a long range jumper by U.T.P.B's Niva Taito as Sul Ross went to the break sporting a 36-33 favor.

A 7-0 run by the visitors to start the third period gave the Falcons a 45-36 go ahead.

A fast break jump shot by Bayli Bowles at (Roosevelt/RHS) capped a 7-0 run and put Sul Ross ahead by a slim 48-47 margin at the two minute mark.

U.T.P.B. fought back and pulled to within a point down 50-49 heading to the closing quarter.

A free throw by Bowles at 8:32 knotted the contest at 51.

The Lady Lobos then broke ahead on a 6-0 run ending with a three-pointer by Hearn at the 6:46 post.

The Falcons' Sierra LaGrande rang up a long distance jumper which put U.T.P.B. ahead, 61-60 at 3:22.

The visitors capitalized on a handful of cough ups by Sul Ross and secured a 5-0 run for the 69-62 victory.

Boren finished the game with a team best 14 points while Hearn and Avery collected 11 and 10 points in the effort.

Hearn led rebounders with eight boards.

The Lady Lobos fired off 22 of 56 shots from the floor to finish at 39 percent but nailed 11 of 26 from outside the arc at 42 percent.
