Bayli Bowles (Roosevelt/RHS) registered 25 points to lead Sul Ross (1-0) to an 89-64 victory over visiting University of the Southwest (0-5) in the season opener Tuesday.
The Lady Lobos will tangle with Huston-Tillotson at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Gallego Center.
Sully mounted a 4-0 lead to begin the contest and never allowed the Mustangs to tie or secure a go ahead.
Bowles ended an 8-1 run on a jumper with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter for a 12-3 Sul Ross advantage.
A mid range jumper by USW's Shatorian Wright pulled the visitors to within an eight-point deficit at 1:41.
A three-pointer by
Lindsey Hearn (Lubbock/Lubbock Christian HS) at 45 seconds would solidify an 21-13 Sul Ross lead to the end of the period.
The Lady Lobos began the second quarter on a 5-0 sprint capped by a floater by
Avery Gregory (Lubbock/Cooper) at 9:51.
Bowles would finish off a 6-0 run with a layup at 1:08 for a 43-24 lead for the home team.
A fast break layup by
Kendra Walls (Rochelle/RHS) at 13 seconds followed by a long range shot by the Mustangs' Nishalina Buksha finished out the half as Sully posted a 20-point, 49-29 lead.
Sul Ross exploded to a 33-point favor at the 2:42 mark, third period, as Bowles connected on a baseline jumper.
A pair of foul shots by Southwest's Stephanie Carrillo pulled the Mustangs to a 30-point deficit trailing 73-43 heading to the closing quarter.
With 9:11 left in the game
Katy Boren (Lubbock/Cooper) sank a three-pointer returning Sully back to a 33-point lead, up 76-43.
Southwest would pull no closer than a 25-point deficit down the stretch of the period as the Lady Lobos notched the 89-64 win.
Boren and
Hannah Carr (Wall/WHS) recorded 11 points each in the victory.
Sul Ross shot 46 percent from the floor against USW but connected on 11 of 14 shots from the free throw line at 79 percent.
The Lady Lobos dominated in fast breaks points by a 16-5 margin and posted a 50-23 margin in points off the bench.
Bowles and
