Lobos Gameweek
MARSHALL- It took ten years to accomplish but the Sul Ross State University football team (6-4, 4-2 ASC) finished the season with a winning record as the Lobos claimed a 47-18 bruising of host East Texas Baptist (7-3, 3-3 ASC) at Ornelas Stadium Saturday.
Former head coach Steve Wright and the 2006 Lobos finished the year on a 5-4 note overall and 4-4 in American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross posted its last non-sub .500 record at 5-5 (4-3 ASC) in 2012 under Wayne Schreider and former Lobo offensive coordinator and current ETBU head coach Scotty Walden. That season also marked the final time the Lobos defeated the Tigers in a 50-37 season finale in Marshall.
In Saturday's contest Sul Ross put up an astounding 30 unanswered points in the first half.
Adam Cruz (Canutillo/CHS) started the scoring fest with a 32-yard field goal with 10:42 left in the opening quarter.
Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs) then hauled in a 44-yard pass from
James Davis (Houston/South) at 9:08 which was the only play of the series before Cruz booted the extra point.
Davis struck again early in the second quarter on a 14-yard toss to Sidrick Brown. A two-point pass to
Steven Savedra (El Paso/Del Valle) put the Lobos up 18-0 at 13:29.
Davis then found
Jeremy Reed (Grandview, MO/GHS) from 17 yards out before Cruz's extra point was blocked with 7:27 remaining before the half.
Davis then scampered one yard capping an eight-play, 61-yard drive at 2:21. A two-point rush failed but Sul Ross would enjoy a 30-0 advantage heading to intermission.
ETBU's Xavier Gray lit the board for the Tigers on a 19-yard pass from Dru Smith with 9:26 left in the third period. A two-point run failed.
Smith connected with Gray again at 8:11 on a nine-yard pass before another two-point conversion attempt fell short.
Cruz then nailed the second of his two field goals, this one from 23 yards with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Smith went to Gray again on a 10-yard scoring strike with 11:45 left in regulation. The two-point attempt missed as East Texas Baptist trailed 33-18.
Sul Ross added insurance at 5:32 as
Adrion Smith (Houston/Clear Springs) scored on a one-yard trot before Cruz's extra point kick.
Davis sealed the victory at 11 seconds with a 33-yard scoring run. Cruz finished off the Tigers with the extra point as the Lobos went on to celebrate the 47-18 victory.
