ALPINE, Texas- James Davis (Houston/South) threw for a season best 321 yards and two touchdowns as the Sul Ross Lobos rolled by Belhaven, 52-36 Saturday in a cool, cloudy homecoming extravaganza at Jackson Field.

Saturday's homecoming victory improves Sul Ross to 2-3 on the year while the Blazers drop to 1-4. The Lobos will entertain Louisiana College in a 2:00 p.m. ASC kickoff next Saturday.

Jeremy Schilhab (Uhland/Lehman) nabbed the first score of the ball game on a five-yard run after an 11-play, 98-yard scoring drive. Adam Cruz converted the extra point kick for a 7-0 Sul Ross advantage with 8:05 left in the opening period.

Belhaven shot back at the 4:56 mark as UTEP transfer Hunter McEachern connected with Nolan Satcher on a 32-yard scoring toss before a failed two-point conversion pass.

With 10 seconds remaining in the quarter McEachern trotted one yard into the end zone following eight plays and 71 yards. The PAT kick was no good but the Blazers sported a five-point lead heading to the second quarter.

Schilhab scored again, this time from two yards out. Cruz tacked on the extra point giving Sully a 14-12 favor at 12:43.

Davis then posted a seven yard scoring run with 8:04 remaining in the second period following five plays and 38 yards before Cruz nailed the extra point.

With six minutes remaining before the break, Davis converted the first of his two touchdown passes as Jeremy Reed (Grandview, MO/GHS) hauled in a 46 yard throw. Cruz was good on the extra point with the Lobos sporting a 28-12 lead.

The Blazers countered at 4:10 as Kevin Shief scored on an eight-yard pass from McEachern. Belhaven failed again to convert a two point conversion pass.

Sul Ross spread the gap with 26 seconds left before the half as Jordan Batson reached pay dirt from 15 yards out as Cruz bingoed on the extra point for a 35-18 lead heading to intermission.

Davis fired a 30-yard touchdown pass to Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs) to begin the third quarter. Cruz's point after kick cleared the uprights.

McEachern then converted the first of two, third quarter scoring passes to Lamique Roberts from 45 yards then found Roberts again on a six-yard throw. Both two point conversion tries fell short as the Lobos maintained their lead, up 42-30.

Schilhab bagged the third of his three touchdown runs with 13:09 left in the fourth quarter with a five-yard scamper capping a 10-play, 55-yard drive. Cruz connected on the extra point giving Sul Ross a 49-30 advantage.

Belhaven scored for the final time of the evening at 10:34 as McEachern found Nate Williams on a six-yard pass. The Blazers were not able to convert the two-point attempt.

With 7:42 left in the game Cruz sailed a 24-yard field goal through the uprights giving the Lobos a 52-36 lead and the eventual win.

Both teams combined for 1,151 yards of total offense.

Adrion Smith (Houston/Clear Springs) led the ground assault netting 90 yards off of 12 carries.

Jones recorded five receptions for 149 yards and one touchdown.

Cruz was perfect on extra point kicks at seven for seven.

Mike Quinonez (El Paso/El Dorado) led the defense with 10 tackles while Job Mason (Thorndale/THS) and Jermaine Stevens (Houston/South) posted four and three breakups respectively.

Stevens also grabbed an interception while Jacob Castaneda (El Paso/Franklin) shouldered a pick for a 46-yard return.
