VideoALPINE, Texas- Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA/California) saddled a Sul Ross career best 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds to pace the Lady Lobos in a 68-61 ASC win over visiting East Texas Baptist Saturday.
The loss against Sul Ross is only the Tigers' third defeat of the season and their first league setback.
Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) secured 14 points while Jonette Jackson (Killeen/Shoemaker) was just a point and two rebounds short of a double double with nine points and eight boards.
As a team the Lady Lobos fired 37 percent from the floor against ETBU at 22 of 59 and converted six of 20 from outside the arc at 30 percent.
Sul Ross took advantage of Tiger turnovers winning a 21-13 points-off-turnovers margin.
East Texas Baptist began the outing with a 4-0 run then used a 7-0 drive to lead 15-4 with 4:53 remaining in the first quarter.
The Lady Lobos worked their way down to a four-point deficit as Aeriel Holiday (Houston/Bellaire) drained a long distance jumper with ETBU up 17-13 at 2:23.
The Tigers built their lead to seven off a three-point shot by ETBU's Morgan Garrett at 2:07.
Sul Ross responded with a Villanueva three-pointer to close the period and East Texas Baptist ahead, 20-16.
SRSU began the second with a Holiday jumper and narrowed the deficit to a deuce, trailing 20-18.
The Lady Lobos called on Holiday again at 9:48 with a jump shot from the elbow to tie the game at 20.
ETBU held a brief lead before a pair of free throws by Villanueva at 7:21 knotted the contest at 22.
Sul Ross broke the stalemate and mounted an 8-0 run which started on a paint jumper by Miles and a free throw also by Miles to give the Lady Lobos a 30-22 favor.
The home team would go on to lead by nine as Miles converted a finger role at 3:53 giving Sully a 32-23 advantage.
The Lady Lobos would hold three more eight-point leads, the last ending on a three-point shot by Ashley Minjarez (El Paso/Irvin) at 23 seconds.
The Tigers scored the final bucket of the second quarter off a layup by Cekret Davis with Sul Ross leading 40-34 heading to intermission.
Minjarez would then close a 4-0 run on a midrange jumper at the 7:12 third period mark to give the Lady Lobos a 44-36 lead.
Villanueva culminated a 5-0 drive with a long-distance jump shot to give Sully their first double digit lead of the afternoon up 52-42 at the end of three slots.
East Texas Baptist pulled itself to three, four-point deficits throughout the fourth period before Minjarez sealed a 4-0 run with a foul shot giving Sul Ross a 65-55 lead with 1:01 remaining in the game.
Ashley Ousley (Killeen/Shoemaker) would score the final two points at the stripe for Sul Ross before a jump shot by ETBU's April Leonard pulled the Tigers to within seven for the 68-61 Lady Lobo victory.
Sul Ross picks up their first ASC win and improves to 1-5 and 4-11 on the season. ETBU falls to 10-3 and 4-1.
The Lady Lobos will host McMurry and Hardin-Simmons next Thursday and Saturday.
