VideoALPINE, Texas- Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) scored a team best 13 points but the Sul Ross women's basketball team fell Thursday night to visiting McMurry in a 63-57 decision.
Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA/California), Jonette Jackson (Killeen/Shoemaker) and Ashley Ousley (Killeen/Shoemaker) all scored 12 points in the effort while Villanueva,
Jackson and Desare Allen (Midland/MHS) contributed seven rebounds each.
The Lady Lobos finished play shooting 22 of 51 from the floor at 43 percent but converted just two of 13 shots from beyond the arc at 15 percent.
Sul Ross jumped out to an early 6-0 lead which ended on two free throws by Ousley with 6:42 remaining in the first quarter.
The War Hawks settled in for an 8-0 run to take a 12-6 lead at 1:30.
Sully managed just a four-point drive to end the quarter trailing McMurry, 16-10.
A paint jumper by Miles at the 8:14 second quarter mark pulled the Lady Lobos to within striking distance trailing 16-12.
A 5-0 drive by the opposition but the visiting War Hawks ahead 21-12 with 6:22 left before the half.
Sul Ross countered with a 7-0 run which culminated with two more foul shots by Ousley and SRSU down 23-21 at 1:10.
Another 5-0 sprint by the War Hawks put McM ahead 28-21 heading to intermission.
McMurry broke out to another nine-point lead over the first part of the third quarter and led 34-25 at the 6:40 mark before utilizing a 7-0 run to post their first double digit lead of the evening, a 41-31 advantage at 1:29.
A pair of layups by Ousley and Villanueva pulled the Lady Lobos to within six trailing 41-35 heading to the closing quarter.
The War Hawks sported another 10-point lead to start the fourth using a 6-0 scoring run.
Sully held a pair of four-point deficits down the stretch but it was too little, too late as McMurry claimed the 63-57 win.
The Lady Lobos drop to 4-12 on the season while the War Hawks pick up their fourth victory of the year and improve to 4-11.
Sul Ross will host Hardin-Simmons at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
