Sully women drop 2 OT decision to HSU

ALPINE, Texas-A 10-7 margin in the final overtime slot lifted visiting Hardin-Simmons to an 85-82 double OT victory over Sul Ross Saturday.

The Lady Lobos finished with four players in double figures led by Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) who finished with a career high 23 points and missed a double double by just one rebound.

Jonette Jackson (Killeen/Shoemaker) tallied 16 points in the effort while Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA/California) and Ashley Minjarez scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

Sul Ross shot 42 percent from the field against the Cowgirls and banked on 50 percent shooting (7-14) over the two overtime slots.

Jackson scored the first bucket of the game 29 seconds into the first quarter before a layup by Miles at 5:49 tied the outing at four.

Two more ties would ensue in the opening period before a three-point shot by HSU's Jasmine McClellan broke an 8-8 knot and gave the Cowgirls a 13-8 lead heading to the second quarter.

A layup by Ashley Ousley (Killeen/Shoemaker) pulled Sul Ross to within three with 7:38 left in the half.

A 5-0 run by Hardin-Simmons gave the visitors some cushion with the Cowgirls ahead, 20-12 at 6:38.

A jump shot by Jackson and a free throw by Miles pulled the Lady Lobos to within one, down 21-20 at the 3:04 mark.

A 7-0 attack by Hardin-Simmons late in the quarter spread the gap back to an eight-point HSU lead, 28-20 at 1:16.

A three-pointer by Mia Ochoa (Levelland/Whitharral) ripped the net in the closing seconds as Sully trailed 30-25 at the break.

Two foul shots by Miles in the third pulled the home team to within a one-point deficit, 30-29.

Jackson banked on a paint jumper at 6:24 to tie the contest at 32.

Following a pair of free throws by the Cowgirls Danie Mabry, Jackson hit from mid range again to tie the game at 34 with 5:18 remaining in the third period.

Hardin-Simmons would shoulder a handful of small leads before Miles converted from the charity stripe to knot the game at 38 at 3:05.

A jumper in the lane by Ochoa at 2:21 gave the Lady Lobos a 40-39 advantage before a layup by Miles spread the margin by three with Sul Ross leading 42-39.

HSU's Madison Spears nailed two free throws to pull the visitors to within one, down 45-41 at 1:31.

Aeriel Holiday (Houston/Bellaire) sank a long range jumper at 1:11 to give Sul Ross a slim 45-41 lead.

The quarter ended with Desare Allen (Midland/MHS) scoring from just outside the lane as Sully headed to the final period ahead 47-45.

Miles would begin the fourth on two free throws to give the Lady Lobos a seven-point 52-45 advantage at 8:57.

Sul Ross would maintain the lead for a majority of the period before the Cowgirls tied the game at 61 off a three-point shot by Madison Spears at 1:03.

Mabry's shot in the paint broke the tie before Ousley's layup at 13 seconds sent the game to overtime tied at 63.

The Lady Lobos would hold three, four-point leads off of two buckets by Miles and a three-pointer by Minjarez.

Hardin-Simmons tied the game and took the lead off of two free throws by Spears with 1:20 left in the first OT.

A foul by the opposition from outside the arc sent Villaneuva to the line where she connected on all three free throws to knot the contest at 75 heading to the second extra slot.

HSU jumped out to a five-point lead at 2:54 and 1:17.

Miles scored the last field goal for the Lady Lobos before Addison Garcia hit a foul shot at nine seconds to give Hardin-Simmons the 85-82 league victory.

Sul Ross drops to 4-13 on the season and 1-6 in ASC play while HSU improves to 6-11 and 4-4.

The Lady Lobos travel to Austin and Belton this week for conference games at Concorida and Mary Hardin-Baylor.
