Lobos rally in second half to beat UMHB, 85-75

BELTON-Sul Ross scored 60 points in the second half and rallied to defeat the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 85-75 Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center.

With the win the Lobos maintain their first place standing in the ASC West up by half a game over Hardin-Simmons.

Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) scored a season high 24 points and collected 11 rebounds for a double double.

Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) also posted a double double 19 points and 13 boards while Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) and Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) supplied 20 and 13 points respectively.

The Lobos shot lights-out basketball in the second half nailing 17 of 25 from the field at 68 percent and finished the day at 48 percent shooting.

Sully converted an astounding eight of 10 from outside the arc in the second half and converted nine of 18 three-pointers for the contest.

Sully led for the first two and a half minutes of the contest before a mid range bucket by the Cru's Sidney Deloach knotted the game at seven with 17:24 left in the first half.

The Lobos held their largest lead of the half as Anders converted from the elbow to put SRSU up 19-13 at 12:06.

A bucket in the paint by UMHB's  Cole Hopkins at 6:31 swung the lead to the home team which began 14-0 run by the Crusaders.

A layup by Anders at 22 seconds cut the Sul Ross deficit to 11, 36-25 before a three pointer by Jalen Jury sent Mary Hardin-Baylor to the break leading 39-25.

The Crusaders punched out an 18-point 43-25 advantage to begin the second half.

The Lobos slowly built their momentum and cut the Cru's lead to under 10 at 15:25 off a three-ball by Anders.

UMHB held Sully at arm's length over the next several minutes before a quick scoring run ended on a free throw by Feliciano to tie the game at 56 with 8:18 remaining in regulation.

A fast break three-pointer by Jacob Caloss at 7:43 put Sul Ross ahead, 59-56.

The Lobos then built their lead to a pair of seven point advantages off of foul shots by Feliciano and Harrison.

A 9-0 run by the visitors put Sully up by their largest margin, 77-63 following two free throws by Thomasson at 3:05.

Sul Ross kept UMHB in check and ended the contest with two more foul shots by Feliciano for the 85-75 victory.

The Lobos improve to 10-8 on the season and 6-3 in conference play. UMHB drops to 6-11 and 3-5.

Sul Ross will host Howard Payne next Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
