Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pack defeats War Hawks, 84-74

ALPINE, Texas- Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) led with 20 points with ten rebounds supplied by Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) as the Sul Ross Lobos topped visiting McMurry, 84-74 at the Gallego Center Thursday.

Anders was just one point shy of posting his first career double double while Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) nailed down 15 points. Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) and Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) rounded out double figure scoring with 14 and 10 points respectively.

The Lobos hammered out a 30 for 61 shooting performance Thursday night at 49 percent. The Lobos hit four of seven shots from three-point range in the first half but were only able to convert one shot from beyond the arc in the second to finish at five of 14 or 36 percent.

It took just over two minutes for either team to light the scoreboard before a shot in the lane by Harrison at 17:58 and another jumper by Thomasson at 17:21 put Sul Ross ahead, 4-0.

Webb bagged back-to-back three-pointers at 16:02 and 15:10 to give the home team Lobos a 10-4 advantage.

Webb then repeated that showing with two more consecutive three balls to give Sul Ross an 11-point, 18-7 lead with 12:59 left in the opening half.

A jump shot and a free throw by Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay) capped a 5-0 run at 10:46 with Sul Ross on top 23-11.

Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) then scored off a layup at 6:50 giving the home team their largest lead thus far sporting a 29-16 lead at 6:50.

McMurry was able to trim their deficit down to eight and went to the half trailing 41-33.

The War Hawks narrowed the gap to a deuce off a three-pointer by McMurry's Calvin McGhee at the 15:18 second half mark.

Two free throws by Blake Cochran at 9:14 tied the game at 55 before Thomasson converted an old fashioned three pointer with a bucket and a free throw to break the knot and put the Lobos ahead by a possession, 58-55.

The Pack provided itself some cushion with a 6-0 run and led 66-57 with 7:05 left in the contest.

Sul Ross would hold its largest lead of the half so far as Harrison banked on a free throw to give the Lobos a 12-point, 73-61 lead at 3:58.

A jump shot in the paint by Webb and a layup by Thomasson would hand Sully a pair of 13-point leads before the War Hawks ended the game on a pair of free throws by Cochran as the Lobos would go on for the 84-74 victory.

With the win Sul Ross improves to a game above .500 at 8-7 while McMurry drops to 2-14.

The Lobos will host Hardin-Simmons this Saturday in a key battle for first place in the ASC West Division.

Tipoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. at the Gallego Center.
