ALPINE, Texas- The Sul Ross women's basketball team surrendered a 28-23 halftime lead as visiting Louisiana College posted a 55-52 conference victory over the Lady Lobos Saturday.
Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA) scored 16 points while Jonette Jackson (Killeen/Shoemaker) added 15 in the effort.
Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) saddled 13 rebounds and was a point short of a double double for the afternoon with nine points.
For the game, Sul Ross connected on 19 of 51 shots from the floor at 37 percent.
The Wildcats won the fast break battle by a 16-4 margin and outscored the Lady Lobos in points off the bench, 23-16.
A three-pointer by Villanueva at the 5:20 post in the first quarter tied the game at nine. Villanueva nailed another three, this time in transition at 4:36 to give the Lady Lobos a 12-9 advantage.
A 4-0 sprint by the Wildcats gave Louisiana College a slim 13-12 lead at the end of the opening period.
Sul Ross bounced back midway through the second quarter and mounted a 5-0 run to lead at the break, 28-23.
The Lady Lobos sported their largest lead of seven as Desare Allen (Midland/MHS) scored on a layup giving Sully a 30-23 lead at 9:12, third quarter.
LC slowly started gaining traction and tied the game at 37 off a free throw by Kourtney McGhee at 3:40.
A pair of foul shots by Ashley Ousley (Killeen/Shoemaker) broke the stalemate with Sully up 39-37 with 2:57 left in the third.
The period ended on an old fashioned three-pointer by Villanueva involving a layup and converted free throw to give the Lady Lobos a 46-42 favor heading to the fourth.
The Wildcats built some steam in the fourth quarter and held Sul Ross to only six points while scoring 13 to escape with the 55-52 victory.
The Lady Lobos drop to 3-8 on the year and 0-3 in ASC competition while Louisiana College picks up their first season and league win at 1-6 and 1-3.
Sul Ross will face University of the Ozarks and U.T. Dallas on the road January 2 and 4.
