HOBBS, NM- Desare Allen (Midland/MHS) posted a double double 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Sul Ross Lady Lobos fell to University of the Southwest, 79-74 Wednesday in Hobbs.
Jonette Jackson (Killeen/Shoemaker) and Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) saddled 16 and 10 points respectively in the effort.
The Lady Lobos recorded one of their better shooting performances of the season nailing 26 of 56 shots from the field at 47 percent but hit only one shot of 10 attempts from beyond the arc.
Both squads traded leads throughout the first quarter as the Lady Lobos finished the period sporting a 19-17 lead.
In the second quarter Sully put up a 4-0 run to lead by five, 25-20 at 7:43.
Sul Ross would go up by seven late in the period before the Mustangs used a quick run late in the half to take a slim 34-32 lead to intermission.
The Lady Lobos tied the game at 34 to begin the third quarter off a layup by Mia Ochoa (Levelland/Whitharral).
Southwest took the go ahead and mounted a 4-0 run to lead 40-34 with 7:48 left in the third.
Sul Ross would pull to within two off a pair of converted free throws by Ochoa at 7:05 but turnovers and fouls by the visitors resulted in a 56-53 lead by the Mustangs to end the period.
Southwest would go on to lead by eight at the 7:51 mark, fourth quarter.
A jumper by Allen with less than two minutes remaining narrowed the Sul Ross deficit to two, 74-72.
Southwest used a 3-0 sprint to win the game and pick up their fourth victory of the season to improve to 4-7. The Lady Lobos drop to 3-7.
The Lady Lobos will return to conference play Saturday as Sul Ross hosts Louisiana College at 1:00 p.m.
