DALLAS- Mia Ochoa (Levelland/Whitharral) registered a team high 15 points to help lead the Sul Ross women's basketball team to a 71-67 come-from-behind victory over Dallas Christian College Thursday.
Sul Ross posted three other players in double figures as Kenya Mile (Tomball/Memorial), Jonette Jackson (Killeen/Shoemaker) and Ariel Holiday (Houston/Bellaire) finished with 13, 12 and 10 points respectively.
As a team the Lady Lobos shot 24-52 from the floor at 46 percent while converting seven of 21 shots from outside the arc at 33 percent.
Following a converted jump shot just 21 seconds into the game DCC fell to a one-point deficit as Ashley Minjarez (El Paso/Irvin) popped the net from long range giving the visiting Lady Lobos a 3-2 lead.
The Crusaders would hold a series of four-point leads and used a 3-0 sprint to end the first quarter leading 23-18.
Ochoa would go long range to begin the second period nailing a transition three at the 8:03 mark to pull Sully to within a deuce down 23-21.
DCC pounced with four, five-point leads before Sul Ross narrowed their deficit down to two off another three-point shot by Ochoa with 40 seconds left before the break.
Dallas Christian would score the last bucket of the half on a free throw to lead 34-31 at intermission.
The Crusaders put up a pair of eight-point attacks and spread the gap, 43-35 with 4:32 left in the third quarter.
Miles hit two free throws at the end of the period with Sul Ross down 50-46 heading to the final quarter.
Miles and Jackson kick-started the rally in the fourth on a jump shot and a fast break layup to tie the game at 50.
The Tomball native went old school hitting another mid range jumper then completing the three-point play of a foul shot to give Sul Ross a 53-50 advantage at 8:12.
The Lady Lobos would go on to sport three, eight-point leads before DCC narrowed the margin to two off a three-pointer by Sapora Richard with 22 seconds remaining in the contest.
Taryn Johnson gave Sul Ross a four-point cushion in the closing seconds of the game with two free throws as the Lady Lobos survived for the 71-67 win.
Sul Ross improves to 3-5 on the season while Dallas Christian falls to 2-8.
The Lady Lobos will face the University of Dallas at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Irving.
