JACKSON, Miss.-Belhaven knocked off Sul Ross by a 12-6 count Saturday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field.
The Lobo offense sputtered on several chances inside the Blazer red zone finishing at 1-7 inside the Belhaven 20 yard line.
As a whole Sul Ross outpaced Belhaven in total offensive yards 372-314. BU coach Hal Mumme's air raid attack accounted for 265 yards through the air which bested the Lobo passing attack by a 99 yard margin.
Individually James Davis (Houston/South Houston) nailed down 12 of 29 pass attempts for 166 yards and suffered three interceptions in the process. Davis was also sacked four times on the afternoon.
Davis led the Lobos in running yards netting 110 yards off of 20 carries while Williton Grear (Austin/Del Valle) ran for 88 yards off of 26 carries.
"Our defense stepped up today and played well but our offense just couldn't get it done," said coach John Pearce. "When you get seven chances to score and can only produce six points, it makes for a very frustrating afternoon."
Fernie Gonzalez (El Paso/Canutillo) tallied a team high 14 tackles for the day including an interception that was returned 30 yards. Tatum Girdy (Houston/South Houston) posted an interception for an eight yard return.
The Lobos' one and only score came at the 5:26 mark in the first quarter as Davis connected with Jeremy Reed (Grandview, MO/GHS) on a 20-yard touchdown pass which finished off a seven-play, 67 yard drive. An attempted two-point conversion pass failed but Sully held a 6-0 lead entering the second period.
The Blazers tied the game with 5:11 remaining before the half as Clayton Webb found Shaquan Holmes on an eight-yard scoring toss. Webb was unable to convert the PAT pass.
Belhaven closed the half at 1:34 as Nate Williams scored on another eight-yard pass by Webb. The two-point pass attempt was unconverted but the Blazers took a 12-6 lead over Sul Ross to intermission.
The Lobos threatened in the second half knocking on the Blazers' door but turnovers near the end zone proved to be Sully's undoing.
Isaiah Swopes picked off a Davis pass at the Belhaven eight-yard line with 41 seconds left in regulation.
The Blazers chewed the clock down to claim the 12-6 victory capping their season at 2-8
The Lobos drop to 2-7 with the loss and will close out the 2015 run next week as Sully faces Howard Payne in a 1:00 p.m. kick from Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.
