KERRVILLE- Despite a 9-0 run by the opposition to start the ball game the Sul Ross women's basketball team battled to a 29-22 halftime advantage and went on to defeat Schreiner 56-55 in non conference play Tuesday.
Sul Ross finished with three players in double figures led by Ashley Ousley's (Killeen/Shoemaker) 14 points. Ashley Minjarez (El Paso/Irvin) and Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA/SRHS) contributed 12 and 10 points respectively in the win.
The Lady Lobos improved their free throw performance from Sunday's loss at St. Thomas. Sul Ross connected on 15 of 20 shots from the line to finish the contest at 75 percent.
"Tonight wasn't pretty but it was a big win for us," said coach Aaron Tavitas. "Aside from it being our first win it was perfect timing in this long four game road trip. I'm proud of our ladies tonight. They showed great effort and perseverance."
The Lady Lobos took advantage of Schreiner miscues scoring 29 points off of Mountaineer turnovers.
Schreiner scored nine unanswered points to begin the contest before senior Amanda Garza (San Benito/SBHS) converted the first bucket for Sul Ross at the 5:56 mark, first quarter.
Garza's jumper began a 12-0 Lady Lobo surge that ended on a shot by Ousley at 2:26 and Sully up 12-9.
Sul Ross would go on to lead by six and ended the period with a 19-15 advantage.
A long range jumper by Minjarez with 7:56 left before the half gave the Lady Lobos a 22-15 lead.
Schreiner narrowed the gap by a possession off a layup by Tylor Rambeau at 6:37 and Sully up 22-20.
A three-pointer by Mia Ochoa (Levelland/Whitharral) began a 7-2 SRSU run that ended on a pair of free throws by Villaneuva as the Lady Lobos went to the break ahead 29-22.
Schreiner took the go ahead with an 8-0 drive to start the third quarter and led 30-29 at the 7:49 mark.
Both teams exchanged leads over the next two minutes before Sul Ross nailed five foul shots to lead 37-32 at 4:34.
The Lady Lobos went on to lead by as much as six, 44-38, with help from a two and a three-point shot by Ousley.
Sul Ross held steady and ended the quarter on a free throw by Minjarez to lead 45-40.
Ochoa would go long range giving the Lady Lobos a 48-46 lead 15 seconds into the closing period.
The Mountaineers recovered with a quick run of their own and led by a slim 50-48 margin with 7:35 remaining in regulation.
A jumper by Minjarez at 6:03 knotted the game at 50.
Schreiner would hold a brief 52-50 lead made possible off a layup by Sabriyyah Fennell at 2:31.
Minjarez would score the final shot for Sul Ross on a three-pointer which was just enough cushion to stay off an attempted Mountaineer rally as Schreiner scored three consecutive free throws in the final seconds of the contest.
Sul Ross improves to 1-2 with the victory over Schreiner while the Mountaineers drop to 0-3.
The Lady Lobos will be in exhibition competition Thursday in San Antonio as Sul Ross faces the University of the Incarnate Word. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
