ALPINE, Texas- Valeria Rey scored an early goal just a minute and a half into the game while Jaedyn Gutierrez nailed a straight-on shot late in the closing half as Sul Ross defeated visiting McMurry, 2-1 Thursday afternoon.
Rey's unassisted goal game at the 1:32 mark as she punched in a chip shot from 12 feet away to give the Lady Lobos a 1-0 advantage.
McMurry's Cristen Lumbreras converted an angle shot on an assist by Hannah Way to tie the game at one less than five minutes after Rey's goal.
Following a long start to the second half Gutierrez scored on a short range dribble kick by Rey giving the home team a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes left in the contest.
"This wasn't a pretty win but it was a needed win," said coach Marquis Muse. "We were able to fight through some fatigue in the second half which enabled Jaedyn to hit her shot late."
Muse said he likes the direction the team is heading in the inaugural season of women's soccer at SRSU.
"For a first year program I'm very pleased with how our ladies have improved," Muse said. "Most of our players have never suited up for a college soccer game and I'm very hopeful that women's soccer at Sul Ross will only get better."
Sul Ross was on goal in eight out of 14 shots while the War Hawks were six of eight in shots on goal.
McMurry outpaced the Lady Lobos in saves by a narrow 6-5 margin.
The Lady Lobos bump their overall mark to 3-10 on the season and 3-7 in ASC competition while McMurry falls to 2-9-2.
Sul Ross will take on Hardin-Simmons this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the final home game of the season.
