ALPINE, Texas- Candice Hugi posted nine kills while Emily Campos and Carly Montero supplied eight kills as the Sul Ross volleyball team stretched visiting Howard Payne to five sets in a 3-2 Lobo victory Tuesday.
"I was pleased with the way that the girls fought to win that match," said coach Dewayne Roberts. "We didn't always play consistently but the girls played with a lot of heart and wanted to win this game."
Sul Ross dropped the opening set in a 25-18 decision before rebounding with a 30-28 victory. The Jackets claimed the third round in a 25-16 win before dropping the final two sets to the Lady Lobos by scores of 26-24 and 15-12.
Setter Elizabeth Livingston saddled 19 assists while McKenna Thomas paced the defense with 26 digs. Katie Reeves and Rachel Rivas sported 19 and 16 scoops respectively.
Alexis Shelton led the battle at the net with nine blocks while Katie Reeves added seven.
"This win gives us momentum going into the cross over this weekend," Robert said. "The team played with pride tonight and they deserved to win this match"
Sul Ross improves to 6-12 on the season and 2-5 in ASC play.
The Lady Lobos will participate in their final cross over this Friday and Saturday at UT Tyler. Sul Ross will face LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist at noon and 7:30 p.m. on Friday before battling UT Dallas to close out the tournament on Saturday.
