Lobos Battle Tough Against Wildcats

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Sul Ross State football team (0-2 Lone Star Conference, 1-3) lost 61-22 to  #9 (D2football.com) Central Washington (2-0 LSC, 2-2),  Saturday night at Tomlinson Stadium.

Central Washington got off to a quick start scoring at the 14:42 mark for a 6-0 lead.  Sul Ross State wasted no time in tying it up.

Just a little over two minutes later, freshman Will Howell scored on a 22-yard run.  The Wildcats pushed the lead to 16-6 with 6:12 left in the first quarter.

The Lobos methodically drove down the field.  At the 1:09 mark, Howell found freshman Aaron Martinez in the end zone.  That cut the gap to 16-13.

CWU scored in the second quarter.  Sul Ross State answered with a field goal from sophomore Marcos Garcia.  That made it 23-16, Central Washington with 6:50 to go.  The Wildcats scored twice over the next 3 and one-half minutes to take control.

Howell threw two touchdown passes and ran for one and finished with 192 yards in total offense.  Sophomore Ronald Bell had a touchdown catch. 

Defensively, SRSU held the Wildcats to 177 yards in the air, 82 yards below their average.  Sophomore Grant Williams had five solo tackles with eight assists for 13 total tackles.  Sophomore Jaeden Servantez broke up four passes, giving him six over the last two games.

Sul Ross State is back home, Saturday, Oct. 3, playing Eastern New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
