Lobos Take On Mustangs On The Road

ALPINE, Texas – The Sul Ross State University football team (1-4 Lone Star Conference, 2-5) takes on Midwestern State (Receiving Votes) (4-1 LSC, 5-2), Saturday, Oct. 24 at Memorial Stadium.

MIDWESTERN STATE - 6:00 p.m.
Offensively, the Mustangs are led by Kaden Brown who is throwing for 357.86 yards per game with 19 touchdowns. Defensively, Brycen Lewis has 18 solo tackles with 25 assists for 43 total tackles and three interceptions.

MSU leads the series 2-1.

LAST WEEK
It was back-and-forth action as Sul Ross State lost 48-41 to Western New Mexico, Oct. 17 at Jackson Field.

Offensively, Will Howell was 25-of-40 for 349 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 99 yards and two scores for 448 yards in total offense. Ronald Bell had a strong performance with seven catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns

Kyree Payton had an impressive all-around performance. He ran for 40 yards and a touchdown, caught three passes for 80 yards and a score and returned three kickoffs for 125 yards to finish with 245 yards in all-purpose yards. Payton now has 1089 career KO return yards, second best in NCAA program history.

Defensively, the Lobos held WNMU to just 102 yards in the air. Emmanuel Osom had three solo tackles with nine assists for 12 total tackles and two tackles for a loss. Chanse Rhynes had 11 tackles while Byron Carter had 10 tackles.

LONE STAR RANKINGS
Sul Ross State is among the top three in the LSC in five categories. The Lobos lead in kickoff return average (25.53) and pass defense (169.57 yards per game).

Individually, SRSU has 26 rankings in the top 10. Leading the conference is Emmanuel Osom in Tackles for a Loss (1.43 pg), Kyree Payton in Kick Return Average (32.53) and Jaeden Servantez in Passes Defended (1.50 pg).

LONE STAR PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Week 0 - Kyree Payton (Special Teams) returned two kickoffs for 113 yards vs. Wayland Baptist (Aug. 29). He returned one 90 yards for a touchdown. His second return was 23 yards and lead to a Lobo touchdown.

Week 1 - Will Howell (Offense) had a strong performance in leading Sul Ross State to a 53-26 win over Adams State (Sept. 5). He was 24-of-39 for 423 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 31 yards and a score to total 454 yards in total offense.

Week 5 - Will Howell (Offense) Howell had a strong performance in leading Sul Ross State to a 56-43 win over Eastern New Mexico (Oct. 3). He was 37-of-46 for 454 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns to total 536 yards in total offense. Howell's total offense is third best in NCAA program history.

MR. KICKOFF RETURN
In two seasons, Kyree Payton has returned 39 kickoffs for 1089 yards and two touchdowns. He is ranked third in career yards. Payton is one of only two players in NCAA program history to return two or more for touchdowns in a career.
