Lobos Pick Up Another Split

LOS LUNAS, New Mexico – Freshman Addison Castilleja had a strong collegiate debut as the Sul Ross State University softball team (2-2) split on Day 2 of the South Central Regional Crossover.  The Lobos beat Adams State 6-4 and lost 14-4 to New Mexico Highlands.

Sul Ross State came out swinging.  Sophomore Jenna Leanos walked and moved to third on a double by junior Samantha Bustos.

A fielder's choice put sophomore Alexandra Ramos at first and Bustos at third.  Ramos stole second and sophomore Andrea Apodaca walked to load the bases.

A wild pitch advanced all the runners, scoring Bustos.  A ground out scored Ramos and sophomore Carissa Fernandez singled to score Apodaca and make it 3-0.

The Lobos push the lead to 6-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.  The Grizzlies mounted a rally scoring three runs.  A strikeout ended the game.

For Sul Ross State, Bustos had two hits.  Castilleja (1-0) gave up seven hits, four runs, walked six and struck out 10 in seven innings.  Her strikeouts were one shy of tying the school record.

For Adams State, Raegan Johnson had two hits.  Isabel Rodriguez (0-1) gave up two hits, four runs, walked five and struck out one in 1.3 innings.

New Mexico Highlands (1-2)
The Cowgirls scored three runs in the first for the early lead.  In the third, freshman Arianna Medina singled, Leanos walked and Bustos singled to load the bases.

A sacrifice fly scored Medina.  Following an out, senior Elizabeth Clemente doubled to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3.

NMH scored seven runs in the bottom half to take control.

For Sul Ross State, Clemente had two hits and drove in two runs.  Freshman Jaclyn Pate (0-2) gave up three hits, six runs, walked four and struck out one in 2.1 innings.

For New Mexico Highlands, London Lamb (1-1) gave up four hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five in three innings.

Sul Ross State closes out the tournament, Sunday, Feb. 1 taking on UC Colorado Springs.  The game is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m., MT.
