Sul Ross State Runs With Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Junior Victoria Aguayo rolled out another double-double as the Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-21 Lone Star Conference, 2-23) lost 73-61 to Western New Mexico (4-18 LSC, 4-24), Thursday evening at Drag's Court.

In the first period, Sul Ross State was the aggressor.  Graduate student Caitlyn Corley drained one from outer Mongolia.

That put the Lobos up 13-6 at the 5:28 mark.  The Mustangs scored seven straight to tie it at 13-13 with 3:51 to go.

SRSU and WNMU went back-and-forth for the next 19 minutes.  Corley knocked down a jumper in traffic.

That tied the game at 44-44 at the 5:26 mark of the third period.  Western New Mexico reeled off nine straight points to finally take control.

The Lobos held the Mustangs to 21.4% from behind the arc, the 11th time in the last 14 games that an opponent shot 32% or less.

For Sul Ross State, senior Cheyanne Bonilla had 16 points and two steals while Aguayo scored 12 points with 10 rebounds and four steals.  This is her second straight double-double and fourth of the season. 

For Western New Mexico, Alina Martin scored 20 points.

Sul Ross State has concluded the 2024-25 season.
