Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lobos Throws a Roadblock At Rams

ALPINE, Texas – All the parts of the engine were in sync as the Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (1-2) beat Angelo State (5-1) 60-47, Thursday evening at the Pete P. Gallego Center.  It was the first win over the Rams in program history.

For the first 15 minutes, Sul Ross State and Angelo State just slugged it out.  Up 21-19 with five minutes to go, junior Jackson Thoele hit a bucket to start a 9-2 run.  That put the Lobos up 30-21 at the break.

In the second half, the Rams went on an 11-6 run to cut it to 36-32 at the 15:58 mark.  Thoele scored on a driving layup to start a run of nine straight points.  That made it 45-32 with 13:09 to go and SRSU never let the lead go below 10 the rest of the way.

The Lobos used an aggressive ball hawking defense to hold the Rams to 30.2% from the floor and just 15% from behind the arc.  SRSU pulled down 32 defensive boards to just nine offensive for ASU.

Sul Ross Head Coach Xavier Webb
"DEFENSE and BROTHERHOOD. Our guys played their tails off for each other on the defensive end. I'm proud of this group, for them to see the results of their hard work in practice and on defense. The coaching staff, Juice and G, were big time with adjustments and play calls throughout the game.

Defense has to be our mantra! But this game was willed by our guy Jack Jack. The guys rallied behind his big plays on the offensive end! It's a good win for our program and look to build upon it in our next home game this Saturday. Come out and support!!! Viva Los Lobos!"

For Sul Ross State, Thoele scored 16 points while shooting 6-of-10 from the floor, freshman Julien Barclay scored 10 points and junior Antwonne Holmes had nine points, seven assists and five steals.  Junior Tim Mikhailov scored nine points off the bench.

For Angelo State, Quadir Pettaway scored 12 points.

Sul Ross State remains home, Saturday, Nov. 22, taking on UT Permian Basin.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
