It was the final sporting event of the 2023-2024 school year at Sul Ross State University as a member of NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference.
This time next spring the Lobos will be in the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II.
On Saturday afternoon during the series finale, the Lobo softball team honored its two seniors —
Samantha Chavez and
Jaelyn Zuniga — after the contest against East Texas Baptist.
The third-ranked Tigers pulled off the series sweep by taking Game 3 by a score of 11-3 in five innings at the Lobo Softball Field.
Sul Ross State ended up recording its first winning record at home since 2022.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Tigers scored five runs in the top of the first to take an early and commanding lead. Ava Rodriguez highlighted the inning with a two-RBI triple to right field while Tauryn Cummings had a two-RBI single up the middle.
ETBU added another run in the top of the second with a leadoff solo home run by Tristen Maddox to make the score 6-0.
On five hits, the Tigers pushed across five runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 11-0 as Maddox had a clutch two-RBI triple to center.
The Lobos managed to erase the shutout in the bottom half of the third when
Vivian Jimenez scored after an error by the shortstop.
Chavez later scored during a first-and-third situation after
Toni Mishnick got caught in a pickle on a delayed steal.
Mishnick drove in the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center that brought in
Jasmine Garcia.
