SOFTBALL: Lobos fall in series-opening doubleheader at UMHB

BELTON, Texas — The final two weeks of the 2024 Sul Ross State softball season has arrived.

On Friday afternoon, the Lobos took on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders for a doubleheader at Dee Dillon Field.

Sul Ross State dropped Game 1 in five innings by a score of 11-3 before playing a competitive second game, losing 7-5.

>> GAME 1:

Bailey Eggleston gave the Crusaders a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a three-RBI single to right.

On a single by Samantha Chavez in the top of the third, Vivian Jimenez was able to score after the right fielder wasn't able to field the ball cleanly, putting the Lobos down by two runs.

UMHB then scored five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the third to extend its lead to 8-1.

The Lobos scored twice in the top of the fourth with an RBI groundout to second by Adriana Hernandez while Ciera Avila stole home to make the score 8-3.

UMHB pushed across a run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to increase its lead to eight runs.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • The Lobos had five hits.
  • Chavez and Lily Wiser each went 1 for 3 with a single.
  • Jimenez and Madison Hodges both finished 1 for 2 with a single.
  • Avila went 1 for 1 with a single and a stolen base.
>> GAME 2:

The Lobos scored early in the top of the first during a first and third situation as Wiser was able to score from third.

UMHB tied up the game in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single by Taylor Henken.

The Crusaders took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI triple and an RBI groundout to second.

Jimenez was able to score on a sacrifice fly to left by Wiser in the top of the third to put the Lobos behind by one run.

With three hits, the Crusaders scored two runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-2.

UMHB added two more runs in the fourth to lead by five runs.

The Lobos cut the deficit to two runs after stringing together three hits in the top of the fifth. Wiser had a groundout to third to bring in Chavez while Toni Mishnick scored on an error by the shortstop.

BreAnna Quarles later had a pinch-hit RBI double.

  • Wiser had two RBI to go 1 for 3 with a double.
  • Chavez extended her hit streak to four games as she went 1 for 3 with a single.
  • Chavez leads the Lobos with a .421 average, 48 hits and 16 stolen bases.
  • Avila went 1 for 3 with a single and an RBI.
  • Avila leads SRSU with 22 RBI, a .477 on base percentage, .587 slugging percentage and 10 doubles.
  • Kyndell Garcia and Kaitlynn Frakes each went 1 for 3 with a single.
  • Quarles finished 1 for 1 with the RBI double.
  • Jimenez drew a walk to go 1 for 2 with a single.
