LONGVIEW, Texas — Behind a season-high 23 points from
Marley Rokas, the Sul Ross State women's basketball team shed its three-game losing skid by notching a 62-48 win over LeTourneau University on Saturday afternoon at the Solheim Arena.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lobos began on a 9-0 run as
Kayley Diaz scored the first bucket with a jumper in the paint.
Rokas scored the next five points as she nailed a three-pointer while
Emily Bunger closed out the run with a jumper in the paint that came off a steal by
Victoria Aguayo.
Sul Ross State closed out the first quarter with a 6-0 run to lead by 13. Diaz and
Cheyanne Bonilla both scored in the paint while
Ariana Escalante made two free throws within the final four seconds.
The Lobo lead grew to 15 after Rokas was fouled on a made jumper as she capitalized on the three-point opportunity.
LeTourneau got to within single digits by cutting the deficit to eight, but the Lobos scored the final four points of the second quarter as Diaz and
Jema Padilla both scored in the paint to give Sul Ross State a 12-point lead.
Sul Ross State led by as much as 13 in the third quarter.
LeTourneau went off on a 7-0 run to trail by six with 6:12 on the clock. Rokas then got the Lobos back ahead by double digits after she scored twice in the paint.
Using a 5-0 run, LeTourneau chiseled the deficit to four at the 2:52 mark.
On a 6-0 run, the Lobos went ahead by 12 after Bonilla, Bunger and Aguayo all scored in the paint.
Sul Ross State held a 15-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter as Escalante landed a jumper in the paint.
LeTourneau attempted to make things interesting as it went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to six points at the five-minute mark.
The Lobos took care of business by making five free throws as LeTourneau fouled to keep the game within reach. The Lobos closed out on a 7-0 run to secure the win.
