ABILENE — Trailing 2-1, the Sul Ross State softball team rallied back to defeat the McMurry War Hawks, 5-3, during the series finale Friday afternoon at Edwards Field.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the top of the first,
Annika Canaba reached on an error by the third baseman.
Nadia Valverde then delivered an RBI double to right center to put the Lobos on top 1-0.
McMurry tied the game in the third and then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
Quickly down two outs in the fifth,
Samantha Chavez drew a walk and stole second. Canaba later hit an RBI single.
Valverde then answered with another RBI single to put the Lobos ahead 3-2.
Sul Ross gained some insurance runs in the top of the sixth when
Jaelyn Zuniga led off the inning with a double to right center.
With a sacrifice bunt,
Veronica Rodriguez moved Zuniga over to third.
Lisbeth Dominguez then hit a clutch RBI double. Aided by two errors in the inning and a single by Chavez, the Lobos tacked on another run to lead by three runs.
The War Hawks attempted a late rally, but they were unsuccessful.
Valverde led the Lobos going 3 for 4 with two singles, a double and two RBI. Valverde continues to lead Sul Ross with 23 hits and 17 RBI.
Zuniga went 1 for 3 with the double while Canaba finished 1 for 4 with a single, two runs scored and an RBI.
Chavez tallied a single and a walk to go 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Dominguez also finished 1 for 3 with a single and an RBI.
Kyndell Garcia had an infield single in the second to end up going 1 for 3.
Briannah Meijas started in the circle going three innings allowing five hits and one earned run.
Leanza Chambers earned the win to improve to 5-3 as she went four innings giving up two earned runs on six hits.
