Everything aligned for the Sul Ross State softball team during Game 3 against LeTourneau University.
Behind a two-hit shutout from
Erin Trevino, the Lobos captured their first win of the season with an 8-0 victory over the Yellowjackets in five innings on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon at the Lobo Softball Field.
"It was really nice because we struggled the last couple of games and even last Tuesday we couldn't put it together," said head coach
Troy Canaba. "Today we finally put it together.
"They were undefeated and for us to give them their first loss was pretty big for us. For our young team — that's what we needed to do."
>> GAME 3:
Madison Hodges got Sul Ross on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to center.
The Lobos extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom half of the third when they tallied two hits and scored three runs.
After a leadoff walk by
Kyndell Garcia and a single to right by
Annika Canaba, Canaba stole second to setup the sacrifice fly to center by
Nadia Valverde that pushed across a run.
Jaelyn Zuniga then hit an RBI single to right center. She later scored on a throwing error by the third baseman.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sul Ross tacked on two more runs.
Jenna Spencer scored on a throwing error by the right fielder while Garcia drove in
Elizabeth Clemente with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Lobos worked their way out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth.
Hunter Montes came in to relieve as she tallied one strikeout and got the LeTourneau offense to groundout for out number three.
Zuniga came into the clutch once more in the bottom of the fifth by hitting an RBI double after back-to-back singles to start the inning by
Annika Canaba and Valverde.
Pinch runner
Hannah Clark then scored on a passed ball to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule. The game lasted a quick hour and 19 minutes.
Sul Ross out-hit LeTourneau 11-2.
Zuniga finished 3 for 3 with two singles, a double and two RBI while
Annika Canaba also went 3 for 3 as she tallied three singles.
"I think after yesterday we came out with a different mentality," said
Annika Canaba. "We wanted to come out and be more aggressive offensively, and I think we did that.
"It was good to see us all come together to come out with this win."
Hodges, Valverde and Spencer each went 1 for 2 with a single.
Samantha Chavez had a leadoff single in the first to go 1 for 3.
Trevino threw 4.1 innings tallying three strikeouts and walking three batters.
Montes faced two batters in 2/3 of an inning.
"I just focused mainly on hitting my spots," Trevino said. "Hitting your spots always helps put you in a good position to win. Defense really worked today.
"Our bats were going today, so it felt really good to finally get the win."
