SOFTBALL: Sul Ross splits doubleheader with Comets

Lobos win Game 1 after two-run home run by Annika Canaba

It was a tale of two different games during Friday's doubleheader between the Sul Ross State softball team and the University of Texas at Dallas Comets at a blustery Lobo Softball Field.

The deciding factor in Game 1 came down to a two-run home run by Annika Canaba in the bottom of the first that helped lift the Lobos to a 2-0 win.

In Game 2, the Comets got the upper hand on offense by winning 15-4 in five innings to earn the split.

>> GAME 1:

The Lobos tallied four hits.

Samantha Chavez led off the bottom half of the first with a single to right which setup the two-run blast to left center by Canaba.

UT-Dallas left four runners stranded while it had five hits.

Canaba finished 2 for 3 with two RBI as she also tallied a single in the bottom of the third.

Chavez went 1 for 3 while Nadia Valverde had a single in the sixth to go 1 for 3.

Leanza Chambers picked up her third win of the year after she pitched a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts.

>> GAME 2:

UT-Dallas took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first to start the nightcap.

Sul Ross then rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second. Jenna Spencer started the inning off with a single to center.

Madison Hodges followed up with a single to left.

Kyndell Garcia drove in a run with a fielder's choice to second that brought in Spencer.

Chavez then hit an RBI double to center and then Canaba reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed a run to score.

With the Lobos holding a 3-2 lead, the Comets scored 10 runs in the top of the third to flip the script.

Camryn Hardin led the Lobos by going 2 for 3 with a single, double and an RBI. Canaba had a double and a walk to go 1 for 2.

Chavez finished 1 for 2 with a double, walk and an RBI.

Valverde and Hodges each went 1 for 3 with a single while Spencer ended up going 1 for 2 with a single and a walk.

Briannah Mejias threw a total of four innings as she allowed nine hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts.

Erin Trevino and Hunter Montes allowed seven total hits in relief.
