WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos pick up 14th victory with 71-63 win over Concordia

Victoria Aguayo tallies a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds

Sul Ross State women's basketball first-year head coach E. J. Lee Smith notched her 14th win of the season, tying the win total from last season.

In addition, Smith has led the Lobos to 10 conference wins, which ties the most single-season conference win total since joining the American Southwest Conference in 1996.

Behind a solid double-double performance from Victoria Aguayo, the Lobos defeated the Concordia Tornados, 71-63, on Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

The Lobos have now won three in a row and four of their last five games. Sul Ross was able to avenge a 65-62 loss suffered to the Tornados back on Dec. 19.

Sul Ross trailed 3-0 early in the opening quarter.

Aguayo scored three quick points to tie the game before Concordia went up by two.

Vania Hampton then landed a jumper to tie the game at five-all with 6:13 on the clock. Hampton later put Sul Ross ahead by making another shot in the paint.

Jocelyne Roque extended the lead to four with 4:46 to go by making a shot in the paint.

Concordia cut the deficit to one with a three-pointer. The Tornados fought back to tie the game at 10-all and then they used a 4-0 run to pull away for a brief moment.

Kayley Diaz made a free throw and then Aguayo landed a jumper to cut the deficit to one with 2:40 remaining.

The Tornados then got hot on offense to take a seven-point lead to end the first quarter.

Emily Bunger started the second frame with a clutch three-pointer, which started a 7-0 run that allowed the Lobos to tie up the game at 20-all.

Hampton and Diaz came away with some big shots in the paint that came off two assists from Aguayo.

The game was tied three more times before the Tornados pulled away to take a six-point lead at the break.

Concordia led by as much as 10 in the third quarter.

Sul Ross fought and clawed its way back to tie the game at 52-all after a pair of free throws by Brianna Martin as time expired in the third frame.

The Lobos outscored Concordia, 19-11, in the fourth quarter as they led by as much as 11.

Aguayo tallied 20 points and 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. This was also her highest-scoring performance.

Marley Rokas and Martin each finished with 16 points.

Bunger grabbed a team-best nine rebounds as Sul Ross won the battle of the boards by tallying 46 rebounds to the 29 for the Tornados.

The Lobos also shot 25 of 33 from the free throw line. Martin went 10 for 14 from the charity stripe while Rokas was a perfect 6 for 6.
