SOFTBALL: Sul Ross drops two to Schreiner

Lobos finish with eight hits in Game 1

KERRVILLE — On Tuesday night, the Sul Ross State softball team suffered a pair of losses to Schreiner University by the scores of 7-5 and 9-3 at the Mountaineer Softball Field.

>> GAME 1:

The Lobos took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jaelyn Zuniga hit an RBI single to drive in Annika Canaba.

Schreiner then put up three runs in the bottom of the first and three more runs in the third to lead 6-1.

Sul Ross rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth. Elizabeth Clemente drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded while Madison Hodges delivered a pinch-hit two RBI single to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Lobos were held scoreless until the top of the seventh when Jenna Spencer drove in Zuniga on a fielder's choice.

Canaba went 2 for 3 with two singles, two runs and a walk while Nadia Valverde finished 1 for 2 with a single and two walks.

Zuniga tallied a pair of singles to go 2 for 4 with an RBI. Clemente was walked twice to go 1 for 2 with a single and an RBI.

Claire Decker added to the eight hits for the Lobos by going 1 for 3 with a single and a walk.

Hunter Montes got the start in the circle as she allowed two hits in one inning of work. Briannah Mejias relieved for the next five innings striking out one batter and allowing one earned run.

>> GAME 2:

Schreiner led 4-0 heading into the top of the fourth where Sul Ross ended the shutout when Spencer drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in Hodges.

The Mountaineers rallied for three runs the bottom half of the fourth to increase their lead to 7-1.

Adriana Hernandez delivered a two RBI single in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to four runs.

Schreiner answered by scoring two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth to lead by six to secure the series sweep.

The Lobos were held to four hits.

Samantha Chavez went 1 for 4 with a single while Valverde finished 1 for 2 with a single and a walk.

Montes tallied a pinch-hit double to go 1 for 1. Hernandez went 1 for 2.

Madilyn Martinez threw 0.1 innings allowing one hit and three earned runs. Leanza Chambers and Erin Trevino came in to relieve.

Chambers struck out two batters in 3.2 innings while Trevino allowed three hits in two innings of work.

>> UP NEXT: The Lobos host LeTourneau University for the American Southwest Conference opening doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, March 3 in Alpine.
