Three Sul Ross State men's basketball players were named to the 2023 All-American Southwest Conference team.
>> Julian Paredes, Forward, Graduate Student (El Paso, Texas):
Julian Paredes earned all-conference honors for the second time in his career. This season he was named All-ASC third team. Paredes scored 287 points this season while he grabbed 94 total rebounds and tallied 51 assists, 29 steals and six blocked shots.
Paredes was named an ASC Co-Player of the Week back in November after he scored a season-high 30 points during a 93-88 win over Trinity.
He ranked third in the conference in made three-pointers with 46. Paredes averaged 2.7 three-pointers a game.
In seven games, Paredes tallied 20 more points as he averaged a team-best 16.9 points per game. He recorded two double-doubles (30 points / 10 rebounds vs. Trinity (11/23) | 20 points / 12 rebounds vs. Ozarks (12/1)).
Paredes finishes his storied career with 1,032 points.
>> Trey Nelson, Guard, Senior (Irving, Texas):
Trey Nelson was named All-ASC honorable mention. Nelson is a two-time all-conference player.
Nelson led the team in scoring with 346 total points, rebounding with 103 boards and in assists with 109. He also led the team in free throws, making 53 of 62 shots (85 percent).
He ranked third in the conference in assists and sixth in steals.
Nelson scored a season-high 32 points during an 83-80 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Dec. 29.
His seven 3-pointers made against UMHB on Dec. 29 are tied for third for the most threes made in a contest.
Nelson tallied 20 or more points in seven games. His second-highest scoring mark came during an 83-78 win over the University of the Ozarks on Jan. 21, where he recorded 30 points.
>> Christian Nevarez, Guard/Forward, Freshman (El Paso, Texas):
Christian Nevarez, who was named to the All-Freshman team, appeared in 25 games while he made 17 starts.
Nevarez scored 149 total points while he reeled in 100 rebounds and tallied 61 assists.
He had a season-high 18 points against the University of the Ozarks on Dec. 1. His second-highest scoring mark of 13 points came against Trinity (11/23), Hardin-Simmons (12/10) and LeTourneau (1/5).
Nevarez ranked second on the team in rebounds, third in assists and fifth in scoring.
His 88 offensive rebounds ranked first on the team.
