RICHARDSON — The Sul Ross State women's basketball team put up a fight during the quarterfinal round of the American Southwest Conference tournament Tuesday night.
Tied at 52-52, the game was sent into overtime.
The University of Texas at Dallas came out on the victorious end with a 62-58 win at the UTD Activity Center.
This was the second time since 2017 in which the Lobos played the Comets to open the ASC tourney.
Sul Ross split with UT-Dallas during the regular season this season as the Lobos won the first meeting in Richardson by seven while the Comets won in Alpine by six in overtime.
In the first quarter, Sul Ross took a 4-0 lead with points in the paint from
Marley Rokas and
Emily Bunger.
The Comets then used an 8-0 run to take an 8-4 lead with 5:32 on the clock.
Sul Ross came back to tie the game at eight-all after
Vania Hampton and
Victoria Aguayo each landed a shot in the paint.
Using a 6-0 run that was capped off by a layup from
Kayley Diaz, the Lobos led 10-8 with 2:47 remaining.
UT-Dallas cut the deficit on a free throw, but
Jocelyne Roque drained a three-pointer to start a 5-0 run that was also fueled by two free throws made by Rokas with 10 seconds to go in the opening quarter.
The Comets landed a three-pointer with four seconds left to trail by two.
Bunger extended the Lobo lead to four to start the second quarter before the Comets went on a 7-0 run to lead by three.
Hampton knocked down a clutch three to tie the game at 19-all with 3:38 on the clock. UT-Dallas responded by going on a 5-0 run.
Sul Ross trailed by as much as seven before Bunger made two free throws and Roque hit a jumper in the point to close out the second quarter on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to three.
UT-Dallas led by nine in the third quarter with 5:54 on the clock before the Lobos closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 41-all.
Rokas landed a layup with 45 seconds to go in the frame to cap off the run.
The Lobos took a 46-41 lead as they began the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run.
Brianna Martin scored all five points, which included making three free throws.
UT-Dallas chiseled down the deficit to three and then Aguayo made a layup to put the Lobos up by five with 7:05 on the clock.
The Comets used a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to one.
Hampton made the score 50-47 in favor of Sul Ross when she made a layup that came off a steal by Diaz with 4:07 remaining on the clock.
UT-Dallas brewed up another 4-0 run to take a one-point lead. Bunger then handed the Lobos a one-point lead by making a layup with 1:32 left in regulation.
The Comets went 1 for 2 from the free throw line, tying up the contest at 52-all. Both teams missed a pair of three-pointers, which sent the game into overtime.
UT-Dallas led by two to start the overtime period. Hampton then tied up the game at 54-all with a layup.
Using a 4-0 run, the Comets went up by four with 52 seconds to go. Aguayo later cut the deficit to two with a layup.
The Comets closed out the contest on a 4-2 run to pull away.

Hampton led the Lobos with 15 points while she grabbed seven rebounds. Rokas and Aguayo added with 10 points each.
Aguayo grabbed eight rebounds while Bunger finished with eight points and 10 boards.
Roque chipped in with six points while Martin had five and Diaz tallied four. Diaz also tallied five steals to add to the 15 total steals by the Lobos.
Sul Ross out rebounded the Comets, 45-44. The Lobos shot 11 of 14 from the free throw line. Martin, Diaz and Bunger went a combined 7 for 7 from the charity stripe.
The score was tied six times while the lead changed seven different times.

- Martin also ranks second in two single-game individual records — three-pointers made (6) and three-point attempts (14).
- As a team, this season's squad tallied the second-highest scoring game in program history (99-86 win over Schreiner on Nov. 26, 2022).
