LONGVIEW — On paper, the cards seemed to be stacked in favor of the Sul Ross State women's basketball team with two games remaining in the regular season.
Sitting in fourth place all alone entering the contest, the Lobos dropped their second-straight game on Saturday afternoon with a 71-60 loss to LeTourneau University at Solheim Arena.
Looking at the bigger picture, the University of Texas at Dallas came out victorious to push the Lobos down to fifth place in the American Southwest Conference standings.
There were four different lead changes in the first quarter.
Sul Ross broke an 8-8 tie on a three-pointer by
Ileana Morales with 2:55 on the clock.
Brianna Martin later put the Lobos ahead by four after tallying a steal and converting it into a layup.
LeTourneau trailed by one point at the end of the first frame after making a layup with 18 seconds on the clock.
The Yellowjackets tied up the score at 15-all with a free throw to start the second quarter.
After a steal by
Emily Bunger, Martin made a layup to put the Lobos ahead before LeTourneau answered back with a three-pointer to take a one-point lead.
Marley Rokas gave Sul Ross a one-point lead after she made a jumper in the paint with 8:39 in the quarter.
The lead then went back to the Yellowjackets on a jumper from two-point range.
Vania Hampton made a midrange jumper to put Sul Ross back on top by one point with 6:19 remaining.
LeTourneau came back to tie the game at 21-all before taking a one-point lead on two made free throws.
Off a steal by Martin,
Kayley Diaz transferred the momentum back to the Lobos by making a layup to give her team a one-point lead.
The pendulum swung back and forth as the lead changed three more times before Diaz tied up the score at 27-all with a jumper in the paint.
Hampton made a free throw to give Sul Ross the one-point lead and then Morales came into the clutch by knocking down another three-pointer with 54 seconds left until halftime.
LeTourneau landed five key free throws down the stretch to enter the locker room tied at 32-all.
The Yellowjackets began the second half on a 5-0 run to pull away. LeTourneau outscored Sul Ross, 28-18, in the third quarter to lead by 10.
Sul Ross cut the deficit down to six after beginning the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run. Bunger tallied four points while
Victoria Aguayo made a layup during the run.
Rokas later exited the contest with five fouls.
LeTourneau was able to close out the game on a 5-0 run to win by 11.
Diaz led the Lobos with 11 points while Martin and Rokas each finished with 10 points. Aguayo added with nine points.
Bunger tallied eight points while Morales had six.
The Lobos grabbed 43 rebounds compared to the 49 reeled in by LeTourneau. Hampton finished with eight rebounds.
Martin finished with a double-double after she recorded 12 steals. The Lobos finished with 27 steals.
Sul Ross shot 8 of 18 from the free throw line and 29.1 percent from the field. LeTourneau shot well, shooting 54.5 percent from the field.
The score was tied eight times while the lead changed 13 times.
