ABILENE, Texas — Three Lobos scored in double digits, however the end result wasn't what the Sul Ross State women's basketball team had hoped for Saturday afternoon.
The Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirls defeated the Lobos, 81-61, at the Mabee Complex.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lobos trailed 14-0 until getting on the board with 4:40 on the clock with a pair of free throws by
Cierra Zapata in the first quarter.
Sul Ross State trailed by as much as 22 points with 9:17 in the second quarter.
Using a pair of layups from
Victoria Aguayo and
Ariana Escalante, Sul Ross State managed to cut the deficit down to 14.
The Lobos got to within 12 after going on a 5-0 run during the fourth quarter with 4:19 left.
Aguayo and
Morgan Peralez highlighted the run by making two layups.

"It was a rough start, but let me tell you I give credit to the other team. Hardin-Simmons has really good players. We have good players. We just have to play solid for 40 minutes. We cannot relax. I thought our players hit the boards really hard, especially in the second half. We cannot afford to miss shots. It was tough. There's effort, our players tried, but it's not good enough." —

- Peralez led the way with 13 points, three steals, two blocks and eight rebounds.
- Aguayo and Marley Rokas each had 12 points and seven rebounds. Aguayo also tallied three steals.
- Cheyanne Bonilla added with nine points, six assists and five rebounds.
- Escalante grabbed six rebounds while she scored five points.
- The Lobos won the battle on the boards by grabbing 47 rebounds compared to the 34 reeled in by Hardin-Simmons.
- Sul Ross State shot 13 of 19 from the free throw line.
