BROWNWOOD — The Sul Ross State women's basketball team extended their winning streak to three with a 66-43 victory over the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Sul Ross started off the game on a 5-0 run as
Melody Martinez scored three points with a layup and a free throw.
Howard Payne cut the deficit to two, but the Lobos powered ahead to a seven-point lead with a three-pointer from
Brianna Martin.
The Yellow Jackets got a three of their own with 50 seconds left in the opening quarter to trail by three.
Sul Ross revamped the lead to seven with a layup by
Emily Bunger with 7:52 in the second quarter.
Victoria Aguayo later made a pair of free throws to extend the lead to nine points.
Marley Rokas landed a layup with 3:09 to go until halftime to give the Lobos a 13-point lead.
Sul Ross led by 11 at the break after a jumper by Aguayo with 30 seconds on the clock.
The Lobo lead grew to 16 in the third quarter after a jumper by
Vania Hampton and two layups from
Taryn Aguilar.
Aguayo made another jumper to make the score 49-31 with 17 seconds to go in the third quarter.
Sul Ross outscored Howard Payne, 14-9, in the third frame.
The Lobos went on to outscore the Yellow Jackets, 17-10, in the final quarter. Sul Ross led by as much as 25 in the fourth quarter after a shot in the paint from Aguayo with 1:35 to go.
Aguayo scored 12 points while grabbing six rebounds and shooting a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
Martin also chipped in with 12 points while she also tallied five steals and grabbed four rebounds.
Martinez added with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Lobos out rebounded Howard Payne, 58-46. Hampton grabbed a team-high 11 boards while also scoring six points and tallying four steals.
Kayley Diaz finished with seven points, three steals and four assists.
Sul Ross shot 15 of 20 from the charity stripe while it also landed three 3-pointers. Martin knocked down two shots from beyond the arc.
The Lobos made 30 points in the paint while scoring 15 points off turnovers.
