SEGUIN — On Saturday night, the Sul Ross State football team spoiled homecoming for the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs.
The Lobos won their second game in a row with a 28-14 victory at Bulldog Stadium.
Texas Lutheran scored first on a one-yard run by Jacob Forton with 10:48 in the opening quarter.
On an eight-play drive, the Lobos got into the end zone with a one-yard touchdown run by
T.J. DeShields, which tied the game with 7:51 on the clock.
The Lobo defense forced the Bulldogs to punt on fourth-and-11 on their next offensive series.
Dayln Dunbar and
Dalton Bills had a clutch sack for a loss of four yards to spoil the series for Texas Lutheran.
Sul Ross then had to punt away on fourth-and-six.
That was the case for the rest of the first half as each squad struggled to muster up some positivity on offense.
Sul Ross broke the tie with 11:31 in the third quarter when DeShields connected with
Vicente Luevano for a 42-yard touchdown.
Texas Lutheran retaliated on its next series by finding the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Seth Cosme to Aaron Sotelo with 9:44 remaining.
The Lobos scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.
DeShields broke the 14-14 tie by throwing a 53-yard touchdown pass to Luevano with 12:05 on the clock.
Sul Ross got its final score in the form of a 31-yard touchdown run by
Ozias Wright with 1:28 to go in the contest.
James Parker grabbed an interception on Texas Lutheran's next offensive series to help put away any form of a comeback by the Bulldogs.
Sul Ross finished with 435 yards of total offense.
DeShields went 27 of 41 with 342 yards passing and two touchdowns while Luevano finished with six catches for 111 yards and two scores.
Wright had 10 carries for 49 yards while
Travell Lumpkin had 21 yards on 11 carries.
Ronin Williams and
Jade Rios led the defense with 10 total tackles each. Williams had 2.5 tackles for loss.
Jaylen Bussey and
Quincy Blair each had one pass breakup. Bussey also had six solo tackles.
