Lobos fight hard in first half against Javelinas

Defense makes big plays in first half

KINGSVILLE — It was a low-scoring first half as the Sul Ross State football team trailed 9-0 in the first quarter Saturday night at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium.

Holding onto 13-7 lead at halftime, Texas A&M-Kingsville outscored the Lobos 23-7 in the second half to come away with the 35-14 victory.

The Javelinas scored on their opening drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Cavazos to Craig Clemons with 9:57 in the first quarter.

On Texas A&M-Kingsville's next series, Jayden Floyd and Dayln Dunbar came up with a big sack to force the Javelinas to punt.

The Javelinas were bit by the turnover bug on their next drive as Quincy Blair forced a fumble that was recovered by Floyd.

Unfortunately, the Lobos were unable to put any points on the board.

The Sul Ross defense kept a high-potent offense to just nine points in the opening quarter. To start the second quarter, the Lobos had a chance to put some points on the board, but Jaden Brown missed a 43-yard field goal attempt.

Ronin Williams came up with a clutch sack on the Javelinas' next offensive series, which led to a fumble recovered by Javeon Moses.

The defensive spark finally translated into a touchdown for the Lobos as T.J. DeShields connected with Vicente Luevano for a seven-yard score with 7:57 in the second quarter.

Texas A&M-Kingsville committed another turnover on the next drive. Williams forced a fumble that was recovered by Moses to shift the momentum back to the Lobos.

Sul Ross was halted and forced to punt on fourth-and-three.

The Javelinas got a 25-yard field goal from Gilbert Garza just before halftime to head into the locker room with a 12-7 lead.

Texas A&M-Kingsville increased its lead to 14-7 with a safety that came off a blocked punt with 10:45 in the third quarter.

From that point on, the Javelinas found a rhythm on offense as Jackson Allen scored on a one-yard run to increase the lead to 21-7 with 7:06 left in the quarter.

Sul Ross got one final touchdown with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter when DeShields threw a 13-yard pass to Austin Ogunmakin.

DeShields finished completing 16 of 32 passes for 162 yards with two scores. Travell Lumpkin led the rushing attack with 12 carries for 56 yards.

Ogunmakin caught four passes for 102 yards.

Williams led the defense with 12 solo tackles (16 total tackles), one tackle for loss, one sack and two forced fumbles.

Blair had five solo tackles, one forced fumble and two pass breakups.

It was a solid showing for the Lobo defense as it came away five pass breakups, six tackles for loss, three sacks and four forced fumbles.
