Lobos win game two in Tuesday split with Schreiner

By Justin Corbett

ALPINE, Texas - Softball dropped the first game of Tuesday's slate but answered with a win in game two to split a doubleheader against Schreiner.

"I'm so proud of this team," said head coach Troy Canaba. "Nothing lately has come easy. We have fought and worked for these wins. We just have to keep improving."

Game 1: Schreiner 4, Sul Ross 2
The Mountaineers took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning and a 3-0 advantage after the second.

Camryn Hardin found an answer for the Lobos with a single to left with the bases loaded to cut it to 3-1 after the second.

Schreiner padded their lead with a run in the fourth and took the 4-1 advantage all the way to the bottom of the seventh. Danielle Gomez doubled to right center to plate Payslee Sims to make it 4-2. Gomez tried to stretch her double into a triple but was called out at third for the final out.

Jodie Vaughn got the start in game one. She finished with five innings pitched, allowing just one earned run and striking out three.

Rebecca Rodriguez threw the final two innings in relief, not allowing any runs and added one strikeout.

Game 2: Sul Ross 3, Schreiner 2
Payslee Sims set the tone with a two-RBI Double in the bottom of the first, plating Hardin and Nadia Valverde to give the Lobos an early 2-0 advantage.

Sully's lead held until the Mountaineers tied it up with two in the top of the fourth.

Hardin singled to left in the bottom of the inning to bring in Veronica Rodriguez, giving the Lobos a 3-2 lead that they would not give up.

Danielle Gomez was on the bump for the Lobos. She went 6.1 innings with no earned runs and two strikeouts. Jodie Vaughn relieved Gomez, converting on the save opportunity with the final two outs.

With the split, Sul Ross improves to 2-3 (1-2 ASC). Schreiner drops to 2-7 (0-1 SCAC).

The Lobos are back on the field to resume conference play on Friday, February 18 with a doubleheader against Concordia starting at 4:00 p.m. at Lobo Field.
