WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos extend win streak to five with 79-63 win over McMurry

Melody Martinez leads the way with 25 points

ABILENE — The Sul Ross State women's basketball team continues to roll.

On Thursday night, the Lobos defeated the McMurry War Hawks, 79-63, at the Kimbrell Arena to extend their winning streak to five games.

Sul Ross started off with a 5-0 run as Brianna Martin got the game started with a clutch three-pointer that was followed up by a layup from Vania Hampton.

A steal by Melody Martinez led to a layup on the fast break by Marley Rokas to help extend the lead to eight with 6:30 to go.

Down the stretch, Martinez made a layup after grabbing a defensive rebound to make the score 23-6 with 2:24 on the clock.

Emily Bunger gave Sul Ross a 14-point lead by making a jumper to end the first quarter.

McMurry cut the lead down to nine in the second quarter, but the Lobos put their foot on the accelerator to lead by 27 with 2:56 remaining after a three-pointer by Martinez.

Kayley Diaz closed out the first half by making a layup that made the score 49-27 at the half.

The Lobos never looked back as they held a 27-point lead in the third quarter as Rokas scored on a jumper off an assist by Diaz.

Martinez led the Lobos with 25 points and four 3-pointers.

Rokas and Hampton each finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Martin added with 13 points and two steals.

Bunger and Diaz chipped in with five points each.

Sul Ross knocked down seven 3-pointers while grabbing 46 rebounds to win the battle on the boards. The Lobos also had 10 steals as they created 27 points off turnovers.
