PREVIEW: Sul Ross seeks to finish season with win over Southwestern University

Lobos host Southwestern University on Saturday for season finale

In the blink of an eye, the 2022 football season comes to an end Saturday, Nov. 12, when Sul Ross State hosts Southwestern University.

The Lobos have an opportunity to finish with their first winning record at home since 2016.

>> HEAD TO HEAD: Since 2014, Southwestern University is 4-2 against the Lobos.

The first two meetings were close as the Pirates won 27-20 in 2014 and 29-27 in 2017, respectively. Southwestern then dominated the third meeting, 55-7, on Oct. 6, 2018.

Sul Ross ended the winning streak in 2019 when it won, 21-9.

In 2021, the Lobos came out on top during the spring while in the fall Southwestern claimed the 49-15 win.

>> THE PIRATES: Southwestern is coming off a 21-17 loss to Texas Lutheran last weekend.

The Pirates had 429 total yards of offense, which was 131 yards more than the Bulldogs.

Southwestern began the year 2-2 after winning the season opener in overtime, 32-31, over Cal Lutheran.

After a 38-33 defeat of McMurry, the Pirates dropped three straight games before notching a 40-29 win over Austin College.

Two different quarterbacks have been at the helm of the offense throughout the year. Junior Damian Gomez got the start last week.

Gomez has completed 55 of 92 passes for 723 yards and four touchdowns. Senior Landy Gilpin has played in eight games as he has amassed 1,156 passing yards along with eight touchdowns.

Sophomore running back Jaquon Marion leads the rushing attack with 454 yards on 96 carries with two touchdowns.

JoJo Wilson highlights the receiving corps with his 54 catches for 575 yards while Ethan Powell has tallied 771 yards on 43 catches.

The duo has been responsible for eight touchdowns.

Junior linebacker Aleksander Gomez leads the defense with 78 total tackles, three sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one forced fumble.

The last winning season for the Pirates came in 2017 when the program went 6-4 overall. The Pirates also had success in 2016 by finishing 7-3.

>> THE LOBOS: Since 2011, Sul Ross has had only two seasons with winning records at home.

The Lobos finished 3-2 at Jackson Field in 2016.

Six years later, this year's Sul Ross squad has a chance to become the second team to finish with a winning mark at home. The Lobos are currently 2-1.

Sul Ross is also trying to finish the year at .500 in conference play, which hasn't been done since 2016 when the Lobos went 4-2 and placed third in the American Southwest Conference.

Prior to that, Sul Ross had not finished at .500 or better in conference since 2012.

>> CHASING HISTORY: History will be rewritten on Saturday.

Senior linebacker Ronin Williams has 262 career tackles. He is just three tackles away from tying the school record for career tackles.

Dusty Hill set the career record with 265 tackles from 2001-2004.

Last weekend, Williams tied the single-game record for tackles after he tallied 20 against East Texas Baptist.

The single-game record was set by Robert Pyssen in 2010 against Mississippi College.
