BROWNWOOD — Behind 23 points from Brianna Martin, the Sul Ross State women's basketball team was able to hold off Schreiner University with a 99-86 victory Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum during the Thanksgiving American Southwest Conference-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Crossover.
The Lobos began the first quarter on a 10-0 run that was fueled by two 3-pointers from Melody Martinez and Martin.
A three by Victoria Aguayo extended the Lobos' lead to 11 with 3:56 to go.
Schreiner came all the way back to trail by two with 35 seconds on the clock. Martin then hit another three-pointer with 17 seconds.
Schreiner got a jumper with three seconds remaining to trail by three.
Sul Ross reignited the offense, taking a 10-point lead with 7:04 in the second quarter after another three-pointer by Martin.
Schreiner cut the deficit in half, but the Lobos stayed on top with a 41-36 lead at the break.
The momentum shifted over to Schreiner in the second half as it took a 46-43 lead with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter.
Two free throws by Vania Hampton gave the Lobos a one-point lead. Schreiner then answered back with the go-ahead layup.
Emily Bunger landed two free throws to put Sul Ross ahead, 49-48.
The Lobos then took control by extended their lead to 14 points after a couple shots in the paint by Hampton and Bunger.
Martinez landed a jumper just before time expired to make the score 69-57 after three.
Sul Ross had led by as much as 13 after a jumper by Marley Rokas with 8:36 in the fourth quarter.
Schreiner later cut the deficit down to five with less than three minutes to go in the contest.
The Lobos went on a 4-0 run to increase their lead to nine.
Knocking down some key free throws down the stretch, Sul Ross was able to pull out ahead to a 13-point lead.
Four Lobos tallied double-digit scoring figures. Martin also added with four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Hampton chipped in with 20 points and nine rebounds while Martinez finished with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Rokas had 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Lobos shot a perfect 20 for 20 from the free throw line. Hampton went 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
Sul Ross grabbed 49 rebounds and had 42 points in the paint.
