It might not show with the overall record, but the Sul Ross State men's soccer team is starting to play well towards the end of the season.
On Saturday afternoon, the Lobos notched a 1-1 draw with the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets at the Lobo Soccer Field.
Mathematically, Sul Ross is not in contention for a spot at the American Southwest Conference tournament.
This was the third draw earned by the Lobos since having back-to-back scoreless draws on Sept. 3 and Sept. 8.
The Lobos have scored three goals in their last three matches after going on a three-game scoreless drought.
"I'm incredibly proud of our group overall. It's a good result for us," said Sul Ross head coach
Jon Evan. "Obviously, super proud of our seniors who have led us. We're playing our best ball at the end of the year now because of their leadership."
Howard Payne struck first in the 24rd minute when Cristian Drake fed a nice ball to Julio Colmenares who finished with a goal.
Four minutes later, Sul Ross tied up the match with a goal from
Xavier Russell that came off an assist by
Antonio Lozano.
The second half was very tense.
There were three yellow cards issued in the 76th and 77th minutes alone. Tempers flared at one point, but never boiled over.
Nine fouls were called during the second half.
Howard Payne had eight shots compared to four for the Lobos.
David Gallegos finished with two shots while
Jair Moreno and Russell had one each. Goalkeeper
Julian Sandoval had four saves.
The Lobos head out on the road to close out the regular season with two games left against LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist.
"We've been through ups and downs. We've took our lumps early," added Evan. "We're planning to keep playing our best ball and developing the young guys, sending these seniors off properly."
>> RECORDS: Sul Ross 0-10-3 (0-6-1); Howard Payne 6-6-3 (3-3-1)
