ALPINE, Texas - Sul Ross opened their football season at Jackson Field on Saturday, falling 27-0 to Hardin-Simmons.
The Lobos chose to defer to the second half and cashed in almost instantly. In just the third play of the game, HSU quarterback Kyle Jones was intercepted at the 40-yard line by
James Milo.
HSU's defense held the Lobos to three plays and forced a punt. They then drove down the field and scored the first touchdown of the game on a six-yard run by Jonathan Castaneda. Jamie Pogue's extra point was good for a 7-0 lead with 8:27 left in the first quarter.
Clayton Maxwell connected with
Logan Schnautz for 12 yards to get near midfield. The drive stalled and
Jaden Brown provided a good punt to pin the Cowboys inside their own 20-yard line at 5:03 left in first.
The rest of the first quarter remained scoreless and the next four combined drives did as well. It wasn't until 8:38 left in the first half when Pogue connected on a 34-yard field goal for a 10-0 score that went to halftime.
Tyler DeShields replaced Maxwell at quarterback in the first half and got the Lobos into enemy territory to start the second half before the drive resulted in a punt.
The defense held strong and forced the Cowboys to settle for a 20-yard field goal for a 13-0 score with 6:23 left in the third.
DeShields found
Vicente Luevano for 17 yards to again get the Lobos close to midfield.
Matthew DeLeon then rushed twice for a combined nine yards to get the Lobos to the HSU side of the field, but Brown was again forced to punt.
HSU found the end zone at the end of the third quarter on an eight-yard pass from Jones to Jayden Coleman for a 20-0 lead. The Cowboys scored once more in the final quarter for a 27-0 lead and the eventual win.
Ronin Williams led the game in both solo and total tackles with seven and 11 respectively. Two of his tackles were for a loss of 10 total yards. He also had a sack for a loss of eight yards.
The Lobos totaled seven tackles for loss in the game for a combined 26 yards.
DeShields passed for 106 yards on 17-of-25 passing as the offense took care of the football, committing no turnovers in the game.
The Lobos fall to 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in ASC play. HSU moves to 2-0 and 1-0.
