Softball moves to 4-0 on the season with doubleheader sweep of UT Dallas #SRSU | #ASCsb | #d3sb

ALPINE, Texas - The Lobos continued their winning ways to start the season on Friday with 13-5 and 11-10 wins over UT Dallas at Lobo Field.

Game One: Lobos 13 - Comets 5 (6 innings)

Sully started from behind in game one after UTD scored a run in the top of the first and second for a 2-0 lead.

The Lobos got on the board in the bottom of the second on a Mary Villarreal single that scored Nadia Valverde for a 2-1 advantage that went to the third.

Valverde stepped in with two on in the bottom of the third and sent a double to left center to score Halie Guillen and Annika Canaba for a 3-2 lead. Martinez was next to the plate and singled home Valverde for a 4-2 lead.

The Comets retook the lead with three in the top of the fourth inning for a 5-4 advantage.

Sully's offense exploded in the bottom of the inning with five runs for a 10-5 lead. Guillen started with a bases loaded hit by pitch to tie the game. Canaba then reached on a fielder's choice as Vaughn was out at home. Payslee Sims was next up and reached on a fielder's that scored Camryn Hardin for the lead. After a Valverde walk, Miranda Martinez cleared the bases with a grand slam for a 10-5 lead.

After a scoreless fifth from starter Jodie Vaughn, Canaba doubled home Hardin before Sims doubled in Canaba for a 12-5 advantage.

Vaughn again shutdown the Comets in the sixth that led to a Hardin infield single that scored Veronica Rodriguez for a 13-5 win in six innings.

Martinez finished with five runs batted in after going 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Valverde and Sims had two RBI.

Valverde and Canaba scored three runs each.

Vaughn went six innings, allowed three earned, striking out three and walking none to move to 2-0 on the season.


Game Two: Lobos 11 - Comets 10

UTD started up 1-0 with a run in the first before Canaba gave the Lobos a 2-1 lead with home run to right center in the bottom of the inning.

Marley Moralez later brought in Kendra Serrano for a 3-1 advantage. Valverde also scored on the play after a fielding error for a 4-1 lead after the first.

Martinez pitched a scoreless second that led to another two runs in the bottom of the inning for Sully. Canaba continued her hot start to game two with a double to left that scored Hardin and Rodriguez for a 6-1 score.

UTD cut into the deficit with four in the top of the third to trail 6-5.

The Lobos again widened their lead in the bottom of the inning when Canaba and Sims hit back-to-back RBI singles before Valverde crushed a three-run home run to left center for an 11-5 lead.

UTD went on to score the next five with one in the fifth and four in the sixth for an 11-10 game heading to the bottom of the sixth.

The score remained 11-10 heading to the top of the seventh. Moralez relieved Martinez in the sixth inning and pitched 1.2 innings of shutout ball with three strikeouts to notch the save in an 11-10 win.

Canaba finished 4-for-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.

Valverde plated three runs and scored twice. Hardin and Guillen also both finished with two runs scored.

Martinez picked up the win on the mound to move to 2-0 after 5.1 innings of work.

The Lobos are currently 4-0 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. UT Dallas falls to 1-9 and 1-4.

The teams complete their three-game set on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch at Lobo Field.
