Lobos end season on high note with 25-16 win over Southwestern #SRSU | #ASCfb | #d3fb

ALPINE, Texas - Clayton Maxwell finished his Sul Ross career with a pair of touchdown passes to help lead the Lobos to a 25-16 win over Southwestern in the #5 seed game of the 2020-21 ASC Championship.

The Pirates got on the board first with a 35-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 4:17 left in the first quarter.

Sully's defense later stepped up with the ball deep in their own territory. James Milo intercepted quarterback Landry Gilpin on the goal line to keep to start a new drive with 14:52 left in the second quarter.

The Lobos began the drive on their own four-yard line and ran the ball on six of the first seven plays. Ozias Wright totaled 22 yards on five carries to help get the Lobos to the 31-yard line. Six plays later, Clayton Maxwell connected on a 51-yard touchdown strike to Dre'Chan Moody for a 7-3 lead with 9:04 left in the first half.

Late in the first half after forcing a punt, Maxwell found Moody again on another long touchdown strike, this time 41-yards to add to the lead. Maxwell, who is also the holder on extra points, took the snap and found Brian Mattison for the two-point conversion and a 15-3 lead with 1:29 left in the first half.

Southwestern drove late and attempted a 28-yard field goal, but Cory McMahan blocked the kick to give the Lobos the ball.

Sully took advantage of the small amount of time left in the half and drove down the field, with the help of a penalty, to setup Jaden Brown for a 35-yard field that sailed through the uprights for an 18-3 lead at the half.

The Pirates took control of the third quarter with 13 unanswered for a slim 18-16 lead for the Lobos heading to the fourth.

The final quarter saw a possession for both sides end on a punt before the Lobos got the ball with 5:53 left and took the clock down to 2:01. It was capped by a seven-yard touchdown run from Wright for a 25-16 lead that also went final.

Maxwell capped his career throwing 11-for-20 for 189 yards and two touchdowns.

Moody caught three passes on the day for 104 yards and two scores.

Wright rushed 29 times for 79 yards and a touchdown.

McMahan led the game with eight total tackles to go with his blocked kick.

Ronin Williams had the lone sack for the Lobos and also blocked a kick.

The Lobos finish their season at 1-4. Southwestern ended 0-5.
