ALPINE, Texas - The Lobos got off to a hot start and took a lead to the half in the ASC Semifinals, but ETBU proved tough in the second half as they ultimately bested Sully by a 72-56 score to advance to the ASC Finals.
The Tigers got off to a 3-0 lead before
Teresa Quintana and
Vania Hampton took the Lobos on an 11-0 run. Quintana started with a triple before Hampton sank back-to-back threes for a 9-3 lead. Hampton finished the run with a layup the next time down the floor for the 11-3 advantage at 6:44.
Sully's lead was cut to six three times before they finished the first quarter on three straight triples from Hampton,
Alexis Carmosino, and
Cassie Hogan for a 25-10 advantage heading to the second. They shot 9-for-16 as a team in the first quarter and 7-for-11 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers controlled the second quarter with a 15-0 run over the first seven minutes of play for a 25-25 tie.
Sul Ross answered with the next four from a Carmosino jumper and Hogan layup to lead 29-25 at 2:17.
ETBU came back with the next four before
Kaylee Martinez's layup with under a minute left gave the Lobos a 31-29 lead at the break.
The Tigers came out with the first bucket of the third quarter, but the game was quickly tied again on a
Keona Loftis free throw for a 32-32 score. ETBU found themselves up two on the next possession before Martinez tied the game at 34-34 with a layup.
Sully fell behind by three on the next possession, but Hampton cut it to one on a pair of free throws for a 37-36 score.
The Lobos continued to stay within single digits until a 7-0 ETBU run put them ahead 52-40 around the three-minute mark of the third.
Sully cut it to 10 on a pair of free throws from Martinez but were outpaced 7-4 the rest of the quarter to trail 59-46 entering the fourth.
ETBU upped their lead to 19 to start the fourth before Hogan answered with a three-pointer and later a free throw for a 65-50 score at 7:09.
It proved to be a low scoring final quarter, with the Tigers outscoring the Lobos 7-6 the rest of the way for a 72-56 win to advance to the finals on Monday.
Hampton finished with a team-high 15 points and had four rebounds.
Martinez boarded a game-high seven to go with 10 points.
Hogan provided 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
The Lobos finish their season with a 10-14 record and 7-5 in conference.
