BROWNWOOD, Texas - After a big conference win at home on Thursday night, the Lobos played Howard Payne two days later in a non-conference road contest, falling 83-67.
HPU started the game with a 5-0 lead before
Vania Hampton's layup at 6:52 put the Lobos on the board.
Keona Loftis soon cut it to 6-5 with a triple but saw a 10-0 answer from the Lady Jackets to trail 16-5 at 4:40.
The Lobos twice cut it to eight with help from Hampton and
Kaylee Martinez, but HPU took a 24-13 lead to the second quarter.
Howard Payne started the second quarter on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 21 at 6:44.
Their lead eventually grew to 25 before a 7-0 Sully run trimmed it to 39-21 with 1:48 left before the half.
Teresa Quintana started the run with a jumper. She was fouled on the make and hit her free throw for the three-point play.
Jocelyne Roque finished the run with a jumper and later a pair of free throws.
HPU put a stop to the run on a layup with 50 seconds left, but Quintana had her own 7-0 run over the last 15 seconds of the quarter with a triple and four free throws for a 41-28 score at the half.
Roque started the third with a jumper to cut it to 11, but a triple from the Lady Jackets upped it back to 14.
Quintana came back with a triple of her own for the start of a 7-0 answer. Roque added two free throws and
Caitlyn Corley finished with a jumper at 5:27 for a 44-37 score.
Martinez brought it to within six with a triple at 4:12, but that was the closest the Lobos came again in the third again before heading to the final quarter down 61-51.
HPU scored the first four of the fourth before eventually stretching their lead to 67-52 at 6:49.
This meeting with the Lady Jackets was a non-conference contest, allowing head coach
Katie Novak to utilize her bench and get 11 players in the game.
Sully stayed competitive through the final quarter and cut it to 12 at 5:21, but the Lady Jackets ultimately took the 83-67 win.
Quintana and Roque each came away with a game-high 17 points. Roque added five rebounds while Quintana had three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Hampton was dominant on the boards with a game-high 13 rebounds to go with nine points.
The Lobos are currently 8-12 on the year and remain 6-4 in the ASC. HPU improves to 8-6 and stays at 5-3.
Sully next travels to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton on Thursday, March 4.
