Lobos fall to Southwestern in season finale #SRSU | #ASCfb | #d3fb

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Football concluded their season on Saturday afternoon with a 49-15 road loss to Southwestern.

"The Lobos came to play after a very stressful week of practice," said head coach John Pearce. "We traveled to Georgetown with an unusually small roster. Several players got their first start of the season and they completed the entire game. We just could not overcome the turnover bug again and some very questionable calls that did not go the way for the Lobos."

Southwestern scored a touchdown on the opening drive for a 7-0 lead.

The Lobos first caused turnover came a few drives later with an interception by Rodney Garza at the Sul Ross one-yard line. Neither side found the end zone again in the first quarter for a 7-0 game going to the second.

Southwestern's final drive of the first quarter found the end zone in the second for a 14-0 lead at 12:11.

The Lobos marched down the field on seven plays and 75 yards to answer the Pirates. Ozias Wright totaled 58 yards between the ground and the air. The big play coming on a 33-yard reception for Wright from quarterback Clayton Maxwell to get to the Southwestern 19-yard line. Maxwell then found Kameron Gonzalez in the end zone on the next play to cut it to 14-7 with 8:53 left in the half.

Southwestern's final two drives of the half resulted in touchdowns for a 28-7 lead.

Late in the first half, the Lobos were unable to convert on a 4th and goal from the one-yard line. On the next play, they were able to keep the running back in the end zone for a safety and trailed 28-9 at the half.

The Lobos used their second drive of the third quarter on a 4-play, 65-yard drive to the end zone. Wright proved prominent again with 19 yards on a pair of rushes. Vicente Luevano caught an 8-yard pass early in the drive and made the big one two plays later. Maxwell found Luevano on a 38-yard strike to the house for the score. The Lobos went for two and couldn't convert for a 28-15 score with 5:43 left in the third.

Southwestern scored touchdowns on their next three drives of the third for a 49-15 score that went final after a scoreless fourth.

The Lobos totaled 444 yards of offense and 340 yards passing. Both game-highs.

Maxwell threw for 340 yards on 26-of-43 through the air with two touchdowns in his final game.

Luevano led the game with 115 receiving yards and eight receptions with a touchdown.

Garza led the game with nine tackles. His interception was returned for 16 yards.

The defense finished with six tackles for loss. Those six totaled 15 yards.

Sul Ross finishes the season 2-7 and 2-7 in conference. The Pirates end the year 4-6 and 4-5.
