ALPINE, Texas - Football had a pair of explosive one-play drives on Saturday in a 72-14 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor at Jackson Field.
"Because of a supply chain shortage we did not have enough points," said head coach
John Pearce. We played a great quarter. Then the big punt return by UMHB made it hard to overcome. UMHB has a lot of explosive players. I know the score got ugly at the end with UMHB throwing the ball late, but I felt like we went toe to toe with the #2 team in the country at times. I told the team that it's a three-game season and I expect to finish the season on a high note!"
UMHB got out to a 7-0 lead after the first and led 17-0 until
Tyler DeShields found
Vicente Luevano on a 52-yard touchdown through the air to cut it to 17-7 in the second quarter.
The Crusaders finished the half with the next 21 for a 38-7 lead at the half.
Sul Ross opened the second half with a huge goal line stop, forcing a fumble at the one-yard line for a touchback. The next play found the Lobos going to the air again, this time 80 yards from DeShields to
Ozias Wright to make it a 38-14 game early in the third.
UMHB's offense supplied the final 34 points of the game through the third and fourth for the 72-14 final.
The Lobos defense forced two fumbles on the Cru for the game. The first came back in the second quarter and saw
Eduardo Garcia return it for 26 yards to the Lobo 48-yard line.
DeShields threw for 173 yards and had two touchdowns.
Luevano had a team-high 85 yards on two receptions to go with his touchdown.
Quincy Blair led both defenses with a game-high 11 tackles.
Hunter Bunch,
Jaylen Bussey and
Eduardo Garcia each totaled seven.
Wright led the Lobos on the ground with 20 yards and a long of 11.
Sul Ross falls to 1-5 on the season and 1-5 in the ASC. The Crusaders move to 7-0 and 6-0.
The Lobos next tangle with the War Hawks of McMurry on Saturday, October 30 in Abilene.
