ALPINE- Sul Ross women's basketball kept pace early with Division II Western New Mexico University before the Mustangs took control and came away with an 89-59 win Monday at the Gallego Center.
Down 2-0, the Lady Lobos used a 6-2 run for an early four-point lead.
Chandre Nunez tied things up on a jumper and
Maria Maldonado gave Sully their first lead with two free throws. A
Kaylee Martinez layup ended the run for a 6-2 lead with 8:55 left in the first.
Western New Mexico responded with a 10-2 run to lead 12-8 at the 4:02 mark.
The Lady Lobos tied the game twice more at 14-14 on a three-pointer by
Jackie Saucedo and 15-15 on
Jocelyne Roque's second free throw. Taylor Allison converted a free throw with 47 seconds left for a 16-15 Mustang lead going to the second quarter.
Presley Anastas started the second quarter with a three off a Roque steal to put Sully back ahead 18-16 just 17 seconds in.
Three-pointers fell early in the second as Maldonado gave the Lady Lobos a 23-22 lead at the 7:20 mark.
Eight lead changes occurred in the first 4:51 of the second quarter. Sully's final lead came at 5:16 on a layup from Magallanes to go ahead 27-26. Western New Mexico retook the lead on their next possession on a three. They'd hold the lead for the remainder of the quarter for a 42-34 advantage at the break.
The Lady Lobos opened the second half with a Maldonado layup to cut the deficit to six, but the Mustangs took control from there and coasted to a 89-59 win over Sul Ross.
Freshman
Presley Anastas led all Lady Lobos with 15 points. She shot 6-10 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc.
Martinez tied a game-high with eight rebounds and added 11 points.
Sully drops to 2-3 while Western New Mexico improves to 3-2.
The Lady Lobos now prepare for the ASC/SCAC crossover this weekend at the Gallego Center. Sully starts action at 1:00 p.m. Saturday against University of St. Thomas (TX).
