MARSHALL- The Lady Lobos used a 24-8 second quarter to erase a seven-point deficit and never trailed again in a 70-68 win over Louisiana College to end the second day of the ETBU Classic.
Sully's first lead of the game came at 8:17 on a jumper by
Chandre Nunez for a 4-3 lead.
LC used a 7-1 run to retake the lead 10-4 with 6:25 left in the first.
Maria Maldonado started a 7-0 run with a layup followed by two free throws from Jacke Saucedo. Maldonado capped the run with three-pointer for an 11-10 lead.
This would prove to be their final lead of the first as the Lady Wildcats ended the quarter on a 10-2 run for a 20-13 lead.
Sully started the second quarter on fire with a 14-0 run.
Ashley Nunez started it with a layup off a steal from Maldonado.
Maldonado later picked off another pass, took it back for a layup and was fouled. She'd hit her free throw to cut the deficit to 20-18 with 8:58 left in the second.
Chandre Nunez continued the run with a couple of free throws to tie the game at 20-20.
Chandre stole the ball on the next possession and was fouled in the act of shooting. She sank the jumper and ensuing free throw for a 23-20 lead.
The Lady Lobos ended their 14-0 run with two free throws from
Kensi Parker and a jumper from Chandre for a 27-20 lead with 5:26 left in the first half.
Both sides traded baskets until
Jocelyne Roque's layup with 1:35 left in the third gave Sully their largest lead of 37-28. That score would extend to the half.
LC started the second half on a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to two just 1:11 into the third.
The Lady Lobos would hold leads of as many as five and as little as one for the rest of the quarter and take a 53-51 lead to the fourth.
Sully used back-to-back layups from Roque and
Kaylee Martinez as part of a 10-2 run to take a 63-53 lead with 6:26 left in the game.
Teresa Quintana added a layup, Chandre a jumper, and Roque finished the drive with a jumper during the eight-point swing for the Lady Lobos.
Jessica Magallanes helped widen the lead to 67-57 on a layup with 3:35 remaining.
The Lady Wildcats went on an 11-2 run to the cut Sully's lead to 69-68 with just 47 seconds remaining.
Martinez made the first of two free throws with 13 seconds left for a 70-68 lead.
LC was able to get off a game-winning three-point attempt but it was no good as the Lady Lobos held on for the 70-68 win.
Maldonado led all scorers with 19 points and added six rebounds. She shot 7-10 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line.
Chandre Nunez led all rebounders with 11 and added 18 points while shooting 6-11 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line. This is her third-straight double digit scoring effort to start the season.
Martinez notched her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Sully picks up their first win of the season and moves to 1-2. The Lady Wildcats slide to 0-2.
The Lady Lobos are next in action Tuesday, November 19 for a home exhibition against University of Texas Permian Basin. Tipoff is schedule for 5:00 at the Gallego Center.
